Nice rig! Have you ever thought about converting to manual hubs? My bro had auto hubs on his 86' 4 runner and they didn't last long. Guess if it ain't broke don't fix it.:)

    Thanks,

I've thought about it, but it's really nice to not have to get out to lock them...I don't know, we'll see what ends up happening with the front suspension. I just took it in for an oil change and turns out a lot of the front steering components are messed up, so that's an expensive fix. It might be because of the bj spacers, so I'm going to research alternatives to torsion bars and bj spacers for up front. On the other hand, the damage could have already been done from some intense off-roading that I've done before I put the lift on.
Right now I have the 1" diff drop to make the cv angles nice so they don't rub too much while rotating during everyday driving. It's too bad that now I have some bad front drive shaft vibrations while in 4wd, but in 2wd and on the highway everything's fine.

Went wheeling out in the desert on new year's day, did a crazy sandy hill dropoff with huuuge moguls in it. I don't know how happy the truck was...it sounds much more rattly in the front driver suspension than before.
Oh and now the light behind the climate controls requires a little tap to make it turn on...oh dash stuff, why you such a PITA to get to!

Some photos from The Slot down in Anza Borrego. Super easy trail until you get to the top of the sand hill. The sand hill was very intense and the rocky bit near the bottom on the way out was pretty crazy, too, but I'm very satisfied with how the suspension performed off road.

My sister got me this power outlet thingy for Christmas and I finally got it securely installed. It plugs into the cigarette lighter outlet and I ran the wire behind the center piece of blue plastic. It's really nice to have the charge cords out of the way! In the current position the charge cord can go straight up to my windshield-mounted phone holder thingy so I can plug my phone in while doing navigation. Super handy!

Awesome truck! How do the OME shocks ride on the road? Really stiff? I have rough country shocks on my pickup and i cant say im too enthused with them. I plan on doing a all new OME setup soon, but curious how they ride.
Btw, im from the bay area. We should go wheeling sometime. Im just getting into the hobby, and totally loving it so far! Cheers.

    Thanks!
Yeah, I guess they're stiff, but I like the ride stiff, so I really like it. I did put in ball joint spacers and I'm not sure how much I like having those. There's some sort of rattle that I've been hearing whenever the wheels go over road damage or anything, which concerns me a little but everything I check looks fine, so :notsure:
I also loosened the torsion bars to get a little more flex out of the system, which made it a little softer than I'd like, so I may try taking out the ball joint spacers and putting in different torsion bars. As it is right now the front is only 1" above where it was before while the back is like 2-2.5" higher, so pulling the spacers and adding OME t-bars shouldn't make too much of a difference, but I think it'll reduce the front flex when off road, which would be a bummer.

Yeah dude! I think I'll be pretty busy for the next 3-ish months, but some weekends might work. A lot of the meets are pretty far away for me, so I don't drive out to those, but anything within about an hour to an hour and a half is fair game for just a meet. I'll drive farther for wheeling trips, but only if the trail's worth it, really... like slickrock is about the farthest I'll go (3.5hrs) because it's an awesome trail. I haven't been to Hollister, yet, so I might check that out at some point.
Have you gotten into the Norcal BS thread yet? There's also a norcal wheeling trip thread where we post up plans for trips.

Also, the OME T-bar is larger diameter for quite a bit of extra weight. I don't know if your bumper would warrant it. I like the stock ones. I'm not running any bj spacer though so I don't know how that changes things. I do LOVE my OME shocks though. Best thing I did besides the header, etc.

I think the next two things we should do is a locker, and a SNORKEL.

Locker- Slightly more functional and probably more useful at this point
Snorkel- freaking awesome and would be a lot of fun to test... and freaking awesome.

:gossip: Yeah I heard of this guy out in the plains region with an even lamer regular cab one, can you believe that?! :p

Yeeeaaahhh, I've heard that anything other than stock t-bars makes for a really poor quality ride, but I need to track down this rattle to see what I can do to fix it. The old suspension did fine with the added bumper weight for a good two years, so yeah the ome bars probably aren't necessary but for height. It seems like there's no winning in getting just a liiiittle extra height out of this IFS. I don't want a 4" lift, I want just a little bit. Right now the ride height is perfect for me.

I already have the ome t-bars so I would just need to swap them out and align just to try it out for a little bit. I could swap back if I didn't like it.

Haha, yeah right now I'm probably not going to get anything new for at least two years because I'd rather fly down to Ecuador to see my girlfriend, but those two are definitely higher on my list. I talked with MrGrimm about his snorkel and he said the main benefit for him was a little increased power and mpg, which I thought was weird, but after he explained it it makes a lot of sense. Plus desert and Sierra Nevada dust sucks...

Awesome. Thanks for all the info.
Ive looked into ball joint spacers, as i would like some extra lift(i want to run 33's in the future.) Ive heard alot of good, some bad.. but more good than bad. Something about the whole idea of them just gives me a bad feeling, so i havent made the plunge.
    As of now, i plan on a setup such as this in the future;
    http://www.cruiseroutfitters.com/sus_pickup.html
Pricey, but from what i hear-so worth it. And it will provide me the lift for bigger tires than the 31s im running now.
Is there any good beginner - mild trails within close range of us? Ive been to hollister with my old 06 pre-runner. Lots of fun, but im very open to something new. Let me know!

1.5" BJ spacer and bring the T-bar down a half inch and you'll be good. Just clearance the fenders some. I run 265/75-16s with zero lift and the only rub I get is this stupid piece of plastic hanging from my wheel well that I keep putting off cutting out. ha

255/85-16s would be amazing on these little Pickups IMO. A little heavy but just the right size.

Which one of those kits are you gonna do? I have essentially the stock/light duty one but I bought the items individually from trdparts4u. You may not want the t-bars (OME 303003), that's where my current mental conflict is :p
If you look at my OP to see some part numbers for my suspension parts.

My first trail up here was in the Knoxville area north of berryessa. It's pretty much just a fire road with some odd-ball side roads that are either really tight and don't get you anywhere or are super tough. There are definitely better places. Most of the trails I've done up here (actually not many...) are in the Sierras, which is a bit farther for you, and I wouldn't consider them beginner. Eagle lakes trail (beginning of Fordyce) was maybe mild, I think it's rated as like a 4/10 on ttora. Slickrock, which I did stock but for my tires, sliders, and bumper/winch, is definitely medium difficulty, not beginner-mild at all. I need to go try it again with the new suspension, but I've heard it's even more difficult now after I think someone removed a bunch of stacked rocks to purposely make it more challenging, so I'm nervous...

I'm still on 31's, but yeah I did exactly that, so I'm at like 1" above where I was before. I am rubbing a little teensy bit at full lock in reverse on that same piece of plastic...I should probably cut that out, too :p

I was thinking the light duty kit. Although, im not too sure. I want to be able to pack my bed up with enough gear to camp with out a ton of sag. I was thinking maybe a bed rack tent too, not sure the weight of those though.

Arent the torsion bars what gives the lift in the front though, at least thats my understanding?

I would be down for anything, i was just looking on 4x4trailmaps.com, saw some good possibilities. Im not opposed to driving up to the mountains for a good day trip of wheeling, i do it for snow boarding day trips all the time haha. This trail caught my eye, any experience with it?

I would suggest the light duty kit. I have a camper shell that's probably 500lbs and I've loaded it up to the gills before and it lowers a bit but they took the weight very well. I've read some builds with some sickening results of like +5" in the rear and +1" in the front with the heavy duty springs...

Yeah, and the alternative is the 1.5" ball joint spacers, which is the route I went. From my research of the OME system, basically people either do OME torsion bars, stock tbars and bj spacers, or OME tbars and bj spacers. I am very pleased with how flexy the front end is with the stock tbars and bj spacers. I did loosen the stock tbars to lower it a little and get the alignment closer to spec, so I'm a little lower than the 1.5" that the spacers add. I did a lot of searching on yotatech forum before deciding on my setup.

Ooooh, it looks like a pretty trail! I've never gone up it, but I can't imagine it being very much more difficult other than like a fire road. Just the views would be awesome, though!
Micah, have you ever heard of this road? If I get a free weekend I'd be down to go check it out. Would probably be in the last week of march, though.

Thanks for all the info man. Im definitely not opposed to BJ spacers. As long as there aren't any negative effects on the rest of my suspension, which it sounds there isn't. Would a 1.5" lift give me enough space to run around a 33" tire? Im going to continue my research, and i have a little time as im working on finishing up a couple other things on my truck before i start working on the suspension(got a camper shell im working on fixing up, need a front bumper, cb radio, ect... i really need to start updating my build thread lol). The rough country shocks will work for now.

Ill be in oregon the end of march, maybe we can plan a sunday in april? I have sundays and mondays off. Would love to get something planned and try out a trail!

That's actually one of the main downsides of the bj spacers, they mess with the stock geometry and can put weird forces on your steering components, from what I've read. I think people fit 33"s on them, but I haven't checked recently. I've heard the occasional rumor that people stuff 33"s on the stock suspension on these trucks...sounds ridiculous! :notsure:
Definitely keep up the research, I gotta go search for your build!

I'm not sure how busy I'll be with academic work during the weekends next quarter (starts april 1st), but I'll definitely keep you updated. Also, check out these threads for trail run, meet & greet/potluck, and mod day postings:
