Having a bit of an issue, truck randomly stops being able to go in gear and shifting is getting extremely clunky when it does. Pulled shifter apart and found this

Also doesnt seem like there was any kind of seat/seal in the top of the tranny.

Being a saturday evening im not going to be able to see any new parts until tuesday unless i get lucky at a pick and pull...for now is it possible to file that ridge down to make it driveable? or will it be to small and not grab any gears? what do you guys think, thanks for any input

Man i sure hope not. When i cant shift it usually shutting it off and starting it again works, sometimes not always. Weird stuff

Same thing happened to me a year ago. You need to change "shift lever bushing-lower" aka "seat" http://www.partsgeek.com/gbproducts/WC/8215-01057133.html
(mine was so worn, 1/8 the size of original. I can see a totally worn out one in your 2nd pic, under the 2 pins in your shifter tower)

And replace the 1 in your first pic, that is very worn too, "shift lever bushing-upper" 8215-01057263 @ partsgeek.com

sub. I started a thread about a week ago with similar issues. Is it clunky in every gear or just certain ones? Mine has been clunky from 1st to 2nd and sometimes to 3rd. Trying to downshift to 1st or get into reverse is normally a pita. Bled my clutch and no luck either.

This is what your upper bushing should look like http://i688.photobucket.com/albums/vv245/parrill82/Tacoma/Tacoma Build Pics/URD_Shift006.jpg

Your lower one should look like this http://cdn.instructables.com/FHD/84L7/FPWWR7XJ/FHD84L7FPWWR7XJ.LARGE.jpg

    So buy these http://i1047.photobucket.com/albums/b471/SCT100/100_3802.jpg

Your upper is so worn, the throw of your shifts are short but 1/2 cm, gears unable to engage fully. Also, your lower seat bushing is worn to allow excessive play in your shifter.

Don't forget to grease up parts before assembly, or you'll be changing these soon.

I filed a little of the ridge on the ball which may or may not have done anything and i also cleaned out some gunk from inside where the seat goes which i think made the most difference.

It actually shifts better now than it did when i first got it. Marlin Crawler bushing and seat on order. :D

Most gear shifts would be clunky, sometimes it would smoothly glide right into gear but not usually. Sometimes it would hang up going into 4th which im curious to see if the new bushing and seat fixes. it also goes into first easier when going like 5mph, used to be almost impossible.

Come to a complete stop for 1st gear, ALL THE TIME. Drift forward a inch before going into reverse. helps like you wouldn't believe.

That Marlin Crawler Bushing kit makes a huge difference i can't stress that enough!

any update on this? I'm experiencing a slight catching before going into gear. It seems like the "clunking" you are describing

Just wondering what the "shifter boot mod" is all about? Sounds interesting.

I was going to till I saw how much 2 day shipping would be for me. I need mine before an off-roading trip Friday. I should have ordered it sooner. Anyways, I'm calling toyota tomorrow to get them, but they always order the wrong parts
I am convinced my local toyota parts dep. is the worst in the country.

I'd like to order a set from marlin crawler. I'm not sure which color to go with though!

1.red, blue or white for the lower?
2.and for the upper just choose "all other common toyota applications"?

    White seat and "all Common"

While you're at it, jump over to URD and order a short throw kit...

    HUGE difference.

Bushing and seat are in, shifts mucho bettero. Feels tight and confidently goes into gear.

The new bushing doesnt move around on the ball like the old one does as its a much tighter fit. Normal? Or is it suppose to be able to rotate on the ball

did you grease the shifter before putting the bushing on?

I did for mine when I re-installed it on my new shifter and it went a little bit easier.

Remember to grease the seat as well
