I'm looking for a Cap for my 2012 Double Cab long bed sport and I have a few questions/concerns to answer before I go to the dealer. I live about an hour from the nearest dealer so I want to get everything straight before I go.

First off let me explain why I want the cap. I do a lot of camping and hiking and hopefully a little more road tripping with my girlfriend this summer, so I'm hoping to put in a raised bed platform and a mattress so that I'll have another sleeping option for my base camp while hiking and on long road trips. I figure on a 12 hour drive, instead of spending money on a hotel just to sleep in, I can pull off on a rest stop or walmart parking lot and take a nap.

So I've been looking into the Leer 180, with the sliding windoors. I found this post and like the looks of it and the fact that it would give me a little more head room. My main concern, other than price, is I have a 15.5ft canoe that I like to take with me camping and I know you can get the racks on the leer but with the cap already higher than the cab and the the rack system they use adds a few inches on top of that, I'm just afraid of the wind catching the canoe and yanking it or the cap off.
I don't have a cap brand preference and I don't have a rack on my cab at the moment.

    So my questions are:
How much should I expect to spend on a 100 or 180 (or similar) Cap?
Does anyone, haul a canoe on their 180(or similar) cap?
Is there a Rack system for the cab that would match the rack or roof height of the cap? Then I could just use foam on the Canoe when I tie it down to a Cab rack.
Where can I get a rack like UTard's? I might PM him...

I found this over the cap rack on expeditionportal, apparently made by Rack it. This might be an option if the 180 would fit under there.

See my gallery for my DCSB with my Leer 180 with Yakima Rack system. I intentionally bought this model cap with hauling a canoe in mind. I have a couple of canoes, one pretty flat and other with a lot of rocker. Without this model cap, the bow of the canoe with a lot of rcoker would hit the roof of the truck cab, with this model it doesn't.

I've hauled canoes all over the state of Maine from paved roads to goat trails and not once have I had a canoe come loose or fall off. I use nylon straps around the bars only.....never tied off the bow and stern.

I found some hydraulic hose with the same ID as the yakima round bar OD (1 1/8" if I recall)....I cut 4 pieces 6" in length and slid them on the bars....this way I can rest the gunwales on those and it prevents slipping on the plastic coated Yakima bars (and maybe even acts as a shock absorber).

    It's a great setup & easy!

I don't think I do...I can check and will post if I can find one.

    My two canoes are:

Mad River Explorer 15' - my river/duck hunting canoe
    Scott Drifter 14' - my pond/flyfishing canoe

And the little extra headroom does make a difference...especially on the DCSB.

I think paid around $1300 when all was said & done with the following:

    • Fully carpeted interior (fiberglass splinters = OUCH!)
    • Removable front slider (aka "beer can" window )
    • 4 - Yakima mounting plates
    • 4 - Yakima 1A Towers
    • 4 - Locks
    • 2 - 58" round bars

this is a Leer 180. The extra head room made up for what I lost with the sleeping platform. Should have gotten the dropdown window behind cab. side windows are sliders with screens. Not the heavier one to support a rack. about $1400. very happy with it.
