Need some info on available intakes.

I have an '06 Prerunner 2.7L and have been putting some serious thoughts on modding it up eventually.

I want to start off with an intake. Looked for something from TRD but the only things available are for the V6. Did some more research after and found that K&N has two available intakes. the california legal 77 series and the not so cali legal 63 series air charger, which I am considering to buy. Does anyone have either one of these intakes installed on their trucks?

If so, was it worth the $340 and is there any noticeable differnece?

Another thing is there are two sensors hooked up to the factory intake.



I circled them in red. Excuse the poor excuse for photo editing haha. Do the K&N intakes have slots for those sensors? The last thing I want is to waste $300+ on an intake, install it without plugging in those sensors and having to deal with a check engine light or a lean air mixture or something like that.

 

honestly..........for the price of the intake............its not worth it. just get a good filter to replace the stock one. you can remove the secondary air filter behind the stock filter in the airbox also....as quite a few folks with the 4cyl have said it makes a good difference. for the"barely any gain" that an intake may give you.....isnt worth the cost,as it would take way,way too long to pay for itself.

 

do the deck plate mod, & then take off the 2nd filter that Will mentioned. i did it, & noticed a bit of a power gain, & better mpg!

crap, just noticed urs was a 2nd gen. i dont think u can do the deck plate mod!

 

Here is a link to remove the secondary air filter. You can go with a K&N drop in filter. Save yourself some money for other MODS.

 

The red circled closer to the air filter is the mass air flow i think ..95% i havn't poked at it yet though. Dnno the other one.

 

I wonder if a larger throttle body+ larger MAF senser... not a spacer.. would help. I'm thinking no because no one has even mentioned doing it ... and I doubt I'm smart 'nuff to think of it first.

 

I think the other sensor is the IAC (idle air control) value. According to this link

Damn thanks everyone... I'll end up taking that secondary filter out tomorrow... Now whats that deck plate mod thing about?

The Tacoma airbox is a pretty solid design as far as airboxes go. The tube between the box and engine is about as smooth flowing as a flex pipe can be and the inlet from the outside air to the airbox isn't necked down or anything. It also pulls air from the fender, instead of in from either the engine bay or a necked down snorkel like most airboxes do. There's probably some turbulance inside the airbox, but getting rid of that by installing an intake wouldn't gain nearly enough to be worth the price.

 

If there is a will there is a way. I'm just gonna look into and see all my possible options. That deck plate mod seems pretty bad ass. Too bad Toyota had to make it near impossible (according to others) to do the mod.

i noticed a bit of difference with the elbow mod. real simple. i also have a drop in K&N. i havent tried the second filter delete but its coming off once i get home. i talked to gadget and another amsoil dealer a month back. They told me the amsoil drop in's are en route. they're going to keep me posted so i will do the same.

with a second gen taco i don't recommend going with the intake. First of b/c since you are in cali you'd have to go with the 77 series which i believe is stainless and thus heats up quicker and negates the "cold air" part and even if you could get the 63 series it's still the "aircharger" series and those suck. I have the "FIPK" series since i have a first gen and i def have noticed good results and would recommend it to anyone but i don't believe you can get the fuel injection series intakes for the 2nd gens so i think going with the deck plate mod, removing the secondary air filter, and getting either a K&N drop in or an AFE Pro Dry S would do a much better job and save you a ton of money that you could put towards exhaust or headers
