Cheap lift and bald BFG AT
285/70r17 BFG AT with mud flaps. Rubbing on control arms at full lock drives me nuts! Plus, this tire is overkill for my needs.

I will downsize next time for a lighter, cheaper, smaller, more mpg friendly tire. Probably a 265/75r16 on a 16" wheel. Personally, I don't like the look of a 265 on a 17" rim. Too much rim. The tire to rim proportion is similar for 265/75r16 and 285/70r17 if that makes sense.

I'm reopening this older thread basically because I've read a lot (a lot) about the differences and opinions between 265's and 285's. The size and the looks and the rubbing and the cutting . . . . To each his own!

But I noticed that a lot of guys when opting for the 285's also go with a larger wheel as well. That being said, and I guess my real question is . .

starting with a 05+ Taco and lifted, how many are using a 285 on a stock 16" wheel and understandably using spacers, how far is the tire now going to stick out past the fender flare? This is a concern especially in the PA state where anything out past the fender could be an issue.

Can we get some real good pictures of side profiles with the 285's on stock 16" wheels? Understanding that every 285 has its own specs, please also provide brand names used.

TW is always a great resource and I'm sure this will help a lot of new guys as well as anyone wanting a change.

    Thanks guys

do I need to put spacers on my truck if using stock wheels and upgrading tires to 285's as the 265's are to small now that I have added a 3" pro comp lift?

I have 2.5" lift up front and 2" in back. Just put on 285/75/16 Goodyear Wrangler MT/R on 16x8 Method Standards with 4.5bs a week ago. Stock UCA's.

I'm lovin this wheel/tire combo and no regrets. Power loss is negligible if you're not hammering on it from the lights. I think a gear change from 3.73 to 4.10 would be golden though. My mpg did drop of course, but totally worth it IMO. I'd expect you can go with a lighter AT 285 tire to get slightly better mpg than muds.

255/85/16 would be a great option too in order to get 33's, just not as much tire selection in that size.

So am I understanding that 285/75 are about at a 33" tire?
