+1, clay bar works great on the windshield and no risk of damage. It takes the microscopic contaminates off the glass which show up when the sunlight is in your face.

I was kidding...yes I wrote the above cleaning info and no I never looked into Bon Ami nor recommended it. It sounds bad to me.

In my experience if it isn't safe for ALL glass it shouldn't be used on any glass.

That's like the dipshits in here saying cook top glass cleaner is OK for your windshield. If that's the case and the glass is the same (it's not even close) lets heat our windshields up to 500* and start dropping hot pots and pans on them and see what happens.

Personally I only use glass cleaners and polishes that are safe to use in OPTICAL applications.

What is it with people using incorrect products on glass? Are there not enough glass products already on the market that people need to think they are scientists and come up with new ways to clean glass?

Clay baring your windshield is retarded. For example - Next time you want to wash your truck use Windex on the paint. Why not? If you use paint products on glass that should work just fine right

Clay will only fill in the tiny gaps and clevises in your windsheild thus attracting more dirt and thus breaking down your glass even quicker. Also last time I checked clay is also not clear so the gaps and crevices you just filled with it are now opaque.

Seems people are truly clueless about what they look through all day every day..... no one has any idea about the chemical composition of glass or what they do to it when they use products not meant to be used on it. These people are chemically altering the surface of the glass and while they don't give a shit because it's only a stupied truck windshield they need to stop telling others shit they know nothing about.

Glass is a term that can be applied to many different materials, but is usually taken to mean silica-based amorphous materials. Glass objects are commonly formed from a mixture of silica (SiO2), the alkali oxides soda (Na2O) or potash (K2O), and alkaline earth oxides such as lime (CaO).



The proportions of silica, alkali and alkaline earth may be varied to form glasses with different properties; a high-silica glass will tend to have a high melting-point (and hence be hard to work at moderate temperatures).


Increasing the amount of alkali chemically disrupts the silica network, and lowers the working temperature of the glass also making it less durable to chemicals.



This poor durability manifests itself in a number of ways, but one of the most distressing is crizzling. A crizzled surface will become covered with minute surface cracks, which over time will grow and penetrate the whole body of the glass and lead to its physical collapse. Before cracks are seen to form, the initial stages of the processes may be identified by the production on the surface of the glass of a wet surface that feels 'slippery'. Droplets of moisture may be seen to form and these droplets lend the term 'weeping' to glasses exhibiting this behavior. This wetness occurs at higher humidities (usually above approximately 50% relative humidity). When the humidity falls, the surface can dehydrate, and crystals may form on the surface of the glass.


As the glass dehydrates further, moisture can be lost from the sub-surface layers of the glass itself and it is this cycle of hydration and dehydration that occurs during environmental fluctuations which leads to the formation of surface cracks. The surface swells as it absorbs moisture, and shrinks as it loses moisture. The effect can be seen in figure 1 which shows an image of the glass surface taken with an optical interferometer, capable of high resolution three-dimensional surface imaging. The swelling of the surface has caused the surface to 'buckle' and rise in ridges along the line of the cracks.

Personally I hate squeegees but it's in the GANA guide to cleaning that was written by many people far smarter than I so included it in my instructions.

My issues with them is they pick up abrasives and than you drag them across the surface scratching the glass.

I had a job with about 4,000 sqft of 1/2" thick low-iron tempered glass in a high end lawyers office and about (30) doors of the same. We finished the job and I got a call two weeks later after the final cleaning was done about a day before it got turned over to the client. The GC told me all the glass was scratched and I needed to replace it. I immediately jumped in my truck and drove to the job site to inspect it. Within 5 minutes I figured out the cleaners had not washed the jobsite dust (drywall from sanding, concrete from slab coring, etc.) off the glass before using the squeegee so they ended up dragging all the abrasives and scratching each and every piece totaling over 100k in damages.

I am sure someone lost their job after that one.

Have to disagree on the negatives of using 0000 steel wool. It is soft enough to use on your skin and certainly has never damaged my glass. It is great for removing paint over spray. I wouldn't use anything more course, but 0000 works fine.
