I've got my original, works fine, I'm keeping it as a spare but you are welcome to borrow it. Hate to see a guy miss a brewery tour.

A small handful of select mods.
The brace on Eric's bumper from Pelfry would not have helped that. Where was the Hi Lift lifting from? The corner? That is weird.

Hi lift from the D ring on the front.

From those pics looks like an extra couple bolts through the bottom would solve the problem, tie the bumper into the lower frame work.

I don't think it's a weak frame issue, more of insufficient mounting to spread the load around. That truck was heavier to lift than my Scout is.

Yeah the frame itself is fine. I think the weak point is the bolt plate welded onto the frame. That plate is only 1/16" thick or so, haven't gotten a measurement yet. So the thought is the pelfry brace would spread the load a little and tie it more into the frame taking some stress off the bolt plate. Ideally I'd like to remove the bolt plates and replace them with new plates that are a little more stout.

Obviously, Toyota did not need to engineer the bumper or it's mounts to be pulled from. On a stock truck, the only forces the bumper would see would be from an impact pushing IN. The bolts won't receive the force of something pushing in, the frame between them will. The bolts only have to hold the bumper on the truck.

You should have a third bolt on the inside that the bumper is also mounted to. Does yours use that third bolt?

The Pelfreybilt bracket provides a spot for a 4th bolt on the bottom. You may need to drill a hole in your bumper for this bolt if it wasn't designed for one.

That 4th bolt goes through the bumper and the bracket and the bracket is bolted to the frame using the sway bar bolts. This way, a pulling force is distributed to the frame proper and not just the stock bumper "holding" bolts.

I've used my winch for two pulls so far where the truck had to be pulled up a steep icy rock ledge. My mounting tabs don't look like yours, and I'd imagine the pulling force on the bumper was much greater than what a jacking it up with a hi-lift would create so I'm guessing Tyler's brackets work well.

If you look at Will's pics, it appears as though the bottom of the bumper mount is pulled out and away from the frame. This is exactly what the Pelfreybilt bracket prevents.
I'm curious now if the ARB has something similar or another way to tie the bumper into the frame. I forget now which bumper it was, but somebody made a bracket that attached to the side of the frame. I don't remember if it was drilled and bolted or welded to the frame.

Yup. The bumper does have a hole drilled that matches up with the holes in the crossmember all lined up with where your bolt goes into Tyler's bracket.

Mine uses the 3 bolts but not that bottom 4th bolt.

Going to call Tyler on Monday and see if they sell the bracket and bolt without a bumper. Their website doesn't even mention the bracket. Good side business for them for the bunch of bumpers that don't come with it.

If you intend to reinstall your sway bar, you may need slightly longer bolts. I left mine off. Don't remember if the bumper came with longer bolts or not but if it did I should have them in my "bucket-o-bolts"

Dunno if anyone is going to be up at Moab Easter weekend but a bud of ours is running in the Dirt Riot race at BFE on Saturday. Hit me up if you'll be there! We'll be in the Taco (Rubi isn't ready to run Easter Jeep)...

Damn you.... probably late this month at the earliest... wanted to wait till I was in Mig class, but don't start that till after Moab, so I may have to stick well them, then have one of the instructors Mig it to the frame (don't have a stick machine that will reach outside the lab.
