I bought my 2014 Tacoma, 4.0 Auto, TRD 6' box on Feb 1st and for the most part, I love it with the exception of one thing:

On three occasions, once at 859 miles, once at 989 miles and again at 1300 miles, when shifting from park to drive the truck acted as though it was in neutral. This morning, when shifting from P to R it didn't move and finally, after stepping on the accelerator, it kicked into gear with a huge thump. All three occasions the weather was very cold and it has never done it in warm weather. I called the dealer and they said they have never heard of this occurring with auto trans and that there isn't much they can do unless a code appears.

I looked but can't really find much to go by and was curious if anyone has had this happen. The truck is the TRD 6 foot box 4.0 crew cab with auto tranny.

    Appreciate any information.

Or let the dealership check it. I would think it's a low fluid issue. When trans fluid is low it will slip. As the fluid warms up its usually not an issue until it's cold again. So usually for the rest of that driving time it won't do it again. Your cold climate temps are probably just aggravating the situation. I would take it in have them top it off / check it.

According to other members here at TW , Toyota charges a fee to check the fluid even on a brand new truck . I beleive to check it properly including a road test with Techstream connected , they charge about an hours labor .
Once again , strange that the fluid is not checked before selling the truck to the customer

Just got back from the dealer-they ran diags with no tripped codes. Everything seems fine. However, it was down 1 full quart of fluid with 1371 miles. They opened a ticket and will monitor from here.

Seems like low fluid may have been the culprit-I hope so because I really like the truck.

I'll go back at the 5k required service and they'll run another diag.

I'm pretty sure you're good to go. Sounded like classic low fluid level. With them finding it a quart low hopefully it's not leaking and won't be an issue anymore.

They said there were no leaks noted in the report. I'll monitor but apparently Toyota is letting them go from the factory with low levels because the internet reveals that this is common practice apparently.

Good to know. Mines only 6 months old with right at 4300 miles.. no issues so far but maybe I'll take a look when I have some time. With our temps down here it would be easier to not notice it.

You're under warranty. Take it back to the dealer and have them check the fluid under warranty.

There's a certain method to checking the fluid (no dipstick) and the tranny has to be cold (so the dealer tells me). When I got mine checked a couple years ago - they kept my truck overnight so they could check it in the morning while the tranny was fully cold.

Great news !! hope you didnt do any damage to the transmission running low on fluid .
For the record , was there a fee for checking the fluid ? Other members had to pay the dealer to find out if it was low . Did they charge for the fluid ?

That's good info. I was looking through those links, specifically the one that links to the Toyota FSM. It states that the filling procedure is different between the transmissions with and w/out a tranny cooler. It doesn't elaborate however. Any ideas on what is different between the two filling instructions?

So there's no effective method for an owner to check on his own? No dipstick? Requires lifting the vehicle and turning wrenches?

My understaning is that because they are a sealed unit, the truck has to be liifted in order to see the resevoir level. They actually use a tool to scan the transmission. Correct!

The fluid is easy to check on your own at home . Use the links posted earlier in this thread . There are 2 write up,s on how to do it .

Look what one of Our members said about getting the dealer to check the fluid on a sealed transmission under warranty posted below .
Maybe should check my level;always thought that it "shifted"funny, but was told by my dealer"it's normal, you don't drive it hard enough to shift different".First time time I was ever told that I didn't drive hard enough.Guess shoud have checked it before now{19,500 miles},but "assumed" that it was pdi'd and was checked.Of course, looked at the rear end plug, and transfer case plug, factory paint mark was never broken.Might add,I work for the company that owns the local Toyota dealer, and haven't been satified with some of the answers to things I have asked,so don't feal bad,we all get bad answers from them.
UPDATE:Just talked to "my"dealer about getting my truck in and having fluid checked. Was told there would be a charge for it.Then said"well that should have been checked on pdi",was then told"No,on sealed trans,it's not cheched, unless there's a leak,or some reason to check."Never heard of anything like that before.FYI everybody.

I beleive the only difference is the fluid capacity . If you look scroll down to page 5 , everything is the same except the capacity or the amount of fluid it takes to complete a fill with trans fluid .
With this said , having a tow package or transmission cooler on your truck , it may take more time to get the transmission up to the proper temp in order to check the fluid.Toyota talks aout the ATF warmer and the ATF cooler .
Scroll down to page 8 for the information
