Sub'd! Awesome idea. I may place mine inside the fuel door though. Does anyone object to that?

Nope, it's all a matter of preference. That's the main place folks put it. I like this one because it doesn't involve any drilling, can easily be put back to stock without leaving any holes.

Interesting alternative to the cubby box or the fuel bay! Just do it... anything's got to be better than what they have on top of the diff., right?

This is where I put mine as well. I don't like cutting or drilling either if it can be avoided.

I much prefer this location over inside the gas cap or the box bin.

The 51026 is a little smaller than the 51319. Like 1/4" vs 5/16" hose?

This thread certainly has legs! I'm not an off-roader, but in Rochester, NY in winter, I might as well be. My dealer wanted $50 to replace the vent when they saw that it was plugged up during my seatbelt recall visit.
10 minutes loosening the vent cap (gently) with Channellocks did the trick.

I'll be doing the taillight version of this mod as soon as the weather gets conducive to garage work (and I'm not skiing).

Thanks to all - and a great detailed writeup, uncleART!

uncleART, I already ordered Toyota Part numbers:90404-51026 and 90930-03136. So, now I'm planning on using 10ft. of 1/4" Fuel Line instead of the 6ft of it in this thread: http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/2nd-gen-tacomas/15686-diff-breather-mod-dummies-pics.html or 5/16" in your thread....do you foresee any complications in doing it this way?

The only potential problem I thought of was that the longer the fuel line, the wider or bigger gauge the inside diameter should be. So, if I'm only extending the line 5 or 6 ft....1/4" should be good but if I'm extending it 10ft. maybe I should go with a larger diameter fuel line. What are your thoughts?

Hey Theo. Sorry for the delayed response - been busy. It really doesn't matter on the size or length. Whatever you can acquire easily. 1/4" would get the job done if you want to go with that. Good luck.

All questions are good questions. Toyota installed a check valve on the rear diff. It allows for warm expanding air out and nothing in. If you submerse a hot diff into water, it will suddenly cool ;you run the risk of drawing water in through the axel seals and possibly thru the check valve before it closes in time.

So if you are taking your truck offroad, then it is important to relocate the rear diff breather higher up. The new location is not critical - the main thing is to get it up out of the water.

    I hope this helps.
