Tacoma Newbie With Wheel Question

Hey everyone, I'm new to the Tacoma family - went to a 2007 SR5 V6 Tacoma from my 2000 4.0 Jeep Wrangler and happy I made the switch!

The one thing I am wanting to change is the wheels - they are bland. I'm looking to buy 16' or 17' Baja or Sport wheels. I currently have 245/75 R16 tires with stock covers so I'm looking for something a little more eye appealing. My question is, I can wear 265/65 R17's without needing a lift correct? I read up on this and the impression I get is that you don't. Any info is appreciated! Also if anyone has anything for sale, please let me know thanks!

No you don't need a lift. That's the size that comes with the TRD sport.

 

As long as you don't go too far from 30.6" of overall tire diameter, the tires will fit and your speedometer will be virtually unaffected. You and i have the same truck just One year different.

 

Yup, what he said. I have a 14 TRD Sport and 265x65x17 is the tire size that came with the truck.

Depending on rim, you can typically go as much as 265/75/16 or 265/70/17. Discount Tire or Tire Rack are common places to look.

This. You can actually go one more step up than what you wre originally looking at. I put my 265/70/17s before my lift, no issues.

 

I was all stock with 265/75r16 on stock wheels with no rubbing.

That looks awesome man! Great work - though I would probably need to paint mine a more chrome-esque color than black (my truck is Raceway Blue).

 

Also, thanks for the info guys. Looks like I will be going after 17's now that I confirmed I can go that large without needing a lift. Now comes the task of finding a set.

I am going to have some TRD Off Road wheels with what is left of the BFG Rugged Trails for sale. They are 16", though, 265/70/16. Maybe 15K left on the tires. Would probably not be worth shipping, though.

One thing to note, the TPMS sensors in the steelies do not work on the stock 16 or 17" alloys. You will have to get new 20 degree sensors. Yours are probably due for replacement anyway. Check RockAuto. There is a discount code on here somewhere.

 

Most tire shops can use the sensors from factory steel wheels on alloy wheels. The sensors in my FJ Trail Teams came from my stock steel wheels.

 

Careful with this one, make sure you know how they are doing that. If they are using straps/bands, that works fine, but does cost extra. If they are flipping the sensors so that the sesnor points up instead of flat against the wheel, this does work, but then you are one uninformed tire changer away from getting the sensors broke. If the tire changer does not know the sensors are pointing up, they can break them when dismounting the tire.

 

OP where are you located? Also check your local CraigsList for wheels. I found a set of Sport wheels for pretty cheap (now going to sell them since I want something different)

Thanks, been stalking the hell outta the marketplace for the last few days. Wish my truck came with 17's as the tires are brand new and would only need the wheels - not both wheels and tire if I do go with 17's.
