Noticed a vibration while driving over 40 MPH, pulled over, and found the shaft had pulled out of the diff. The diff was leaking and the Shaft had lots of play in it.
Had to stop at a Firestone. They replaced the shaft... aaaand... It pulled out again.
I thought there was a write-up about this somewhere in here, but all I found were guides on how to replace the shaft. Has anyone seen this before? Please tell me there is an inexpensive fix for this. I am stranded in Hermitage, PA, on the way back to VA.

It shouldn't just pull out... Is the retaining clip missing?

Clip was intact. No work has been done on the shafts, before today. No wheeling since the beginning of the year. I drove from norfolk, va, to put in bay, oh, with no problem... till the return trip.

Unlikely but possibly the clips are worn and have lost their strength. How many miles?

Something must be wrong inside the Diff. I am going to assume that the bearing is probably banged up from this, not sure why the first CV came out, maybe because the bearing was shot and had too much lateral play in the shaft. Replace the bearing on that side, clean the groove that the CV slides in to, clean the groove that the C clip snaps in to, drain the diff fluid and check for major debris.

Firestone guy said there was no apparent damage to the diff, and no metal in the lube. That's why we went with a new shaft.
I would do the work myself, but my garage is too far away;)

He didn't find anything wrong with the original ring, and said the shaft got beat up from flopping around.

Which side, driver or passenger? Also, when you said it had alot of play, did you push the shaft all the way in to find it had alot of play?

I would try and replace the bearing.

you could be really ahead of the game by installing the ecgs bushing

Depending on how quickly he needs to get home, he may have to settle for just the OE replacement. Soonest ECGS would be able to get a bearing to where he is at may be Tuesday afternoon. May be able to find an OE replacement at the parts store, if not then the dealer.

It has movement in all directions. I suspect the bearing. Driver's side.

My 2012 is currently at the dealer as i noticed an oily drip coming from the front pass cv boot and shaft. Also saw some evidence of the shock having some oily residue on it too. The truck is also a bit lower on the whole pass side. 20k miles with light use and little off roading. WTF? No lift or alterations other than RI leds and bull bar.

it replaces that nasty little needle bearing with a bronze, ptfe impregnated bushing that tightens up the assembly.

it was made to cope with trucks that were lifted, as the added angle on the c/v shaft in that sloppy bearing makes them warble around and vibrate

That is the side that is notorious for the bearing issue, whether you have a lift or not. And wow, yours sounds like the worst case scenario.

Here is a thread on the issue http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/2n...nt-differential-bearing-vibration-thread.html and here is where ECGS chimes in and comes with a solution http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/2n...l-bearing-vibration-thread-4.html#post4240041

With what was described previously, I doubt this would work, but it's worth a shot. If there is too much lateral movement because the bearing is shot, it is eventually going to come out again, but it may be the best thing to get home, just have to keep your speed down to where it won't come out as quickly.
