    What do you guys think?

    Options:

    1) Keep breaking and fixing yota stuff at random intervals (It has eaten about $2200 in replacement parts already)

    2) Junkyard dog a 9" out of an old van and hillbilly up some brakes (maybe not so reliable, weak housing, would need regear + locker etc) -$1500 or so

    3) Budget currie 9" semi floater with stock drum brakes (reasonable choice, would probably be strong enough, certainly stronger than the elocker) -$2500 or so depending on locker

    4) Fabricated housing (ruffstuff, trail gear, etc) 9" with currie guts and stock drum brakes (stronger housing, more clearance, could get it in the proper width, not much more expensive than option 3) -$3000 or so

    5) Full floater 9", fabricated housing, and disk brakes (lose E-brake, but would be lightweight and trail repairs would be easy) -$4000-$7500

    6) Rock Jock 60 with Ox locker and stock drum brakes (I like this one the best. It's heavy but reliable. Maintenance would be tough, but not worse than stock axle. Would require a new drive shaft. Maybe others would as well, dunno) - Around $4000.

To get my truck home, I have parts on the way for option 1. I like option 4 because I can do it in pieces, and build it one paycheck at a time. I like option 6 because it would be DONE. Wouldn't have to worry about that piece of the puzzle any longer, but it would be a heavy pig.

    7) Fully fabricated Diamond housing with a 9.5" Landcruiser third stuffed with a Detroit locker turning custom 'moly full floating shafts. Brakes will be front disks from an 04, with a small parking brake drum to boot. The four week wait begins.

Also: For sale: ECGS E-locker third with 4.88's less than 150 miles (like new condition $700+shipping, I'll even throw in the Elocker motor), driver side axle shaft with brakes (good trail spare, bearings have 80K miles, $150+shipping) and two driver side shafts FREE (no, I won't ship it). One has some wobble to it but would get you back to camp, the other is straight but the last 1/2" of splines (where the locker side gear engages) are stripped. It would also get you back to camp, it also comes with good bearings, a brake backing plate and wheel cylinder but no wheel studs. All of this is still on the truck, but will be removed, cleaned, and inspected this weekend. Would also trade for ammo or something cool.

Don't do a trailgear housing. The bottom is shaved to much and is prone to leaking where the 3rd mates up

I read something about that on Pirate, but it was an older thread and figured they would have unfucked that by now.

Only thing they fixed on that axle is by sticking a baffle on the inside to keep oil from flowing out of the breather hole.

My vote is for option 3 or option 6. More 6 but it's pricey.

I'm still waiting on parts to get it home! I think I'm going to slap stock stuff back in it for now and start putting together a decent 9". Probably re use the factory drums so I don't have to dick with the brakes, with a decent fabricated housing (ruffstuff or camburg maybe). Not sure what locker to get yet. I don't think I have enough power to grenade a detroit, might go that route. We'll see what happens, but it will take me a while to build it. :D

Sounds cool. I look forward to seeing what you come up with.

Is your truck stranded somewhere? You mentioned parts to get it home.

Not really stranded, just 150 miles away from home in Grandma's driveway. I've been riding my dirt scooter to work. I need a trailer, but at 91" wide it's hard to find anything wide enough for this pig. The junkyard axle came in last night. The backing plate (where the brakes attach) was bent and two of the mounting studs were stripped, but the wheel bearing and seals look good so I just beat on it with a rubber mallet and got it straight enough to work. I hope anyway.

Well, I finally got it back on the trail again. The 04 Tacoma disks are a good match to the 05 fronts, and although it did need a proportioning valve it didn't require many turns on the knob to balance the braking. Thanks goes out to Brian of Diamond axle for turning out a fantastic product on time (actually a day early!) and recommending an excellent camping site in Colorado. Check 'em out-

There is already two stripes of rubber leaving my driveway lol. Working on the driveline now. I changed the pinion angle on the new axle and thought I could compensate by adjusting the carrier bearing height, but it vibrates like crazy. The yoke that attaches to the pinion end of the drive shaft (not the one with bolt holes in it, the one on the shaft itself) seems to be bent somehow too. It vibrated with the old axle (after grenading the third) so maybe when the third locked up it bent the shaft a little. Might need to order a new one, but I'm going to mess with the carrier bearing height and see what happens.

Depends on what year it is and what engine is in it. If it has the 5.7, it has a 10.5" ring gear. The 4.6L gets a 9.5" just like I'm running. The older bodystyle Tundra had an axle that is either 8" or 8.4", the same as Tacoma.
