I dropped my '05 off at the dealers for the seat belt recall yesterday and asked them to inspect the frame for rust as I dropped a 2x3 inch chunk of rust on the service desk. (POR-15 coating held it together nicely) It came from the drivers side cat area. Not totally through the frame yet, but close. They took pics of it and sent it to Toyota. Said I should hear from them in a day or two.

    Update:

Had to leave the country for work for the past month so I didn't get a chance to take the truck in until today.

Made an appointment yesterday and told the service advisor I wanted my frame inspected. Everything was set up and I showed up this afternoon to drop the truck off. WHAT A WASTE OF FKN TIME.
After pulling up my VIN, the advisor told me there was no recall on the truck for frame rust. I responded that I wanted the frame inspected so there was an 'official' report that I was concerned about the frame and its structural integrity. The reply was- "we will not look at it until Toyota issues a recall."

After going back and forth for a few minutes and even bringing up the service campaign E0D that was just released, still nothing acceptable from the dealer. All I was told was to call toyota customer service. I even showed the pictures and they acknowledged the issue but nothing. I was even told that unless your VIN was not specified in the E0D, they won't even do that.

I'm sorry but the dealer not even wanting to look at the frame AFTER I told them a frame inspection is what I wanted done is total horseshit.

I called customer service and got a reference number; also followed up with an email and the pictures.

This is one sure way to build repeat business, let me tell you........

Have not heard back from the dealer yet. But, I received a letter from Toyota today announcing a "Limited Service Campaign" for certain 2005-2008 Tacomas.

This campaign is for Tacomas in "Cold Climate States" (CT, DE, IL, IN, KY, MA, MD, ME, MI, MN, NH, NJ, NY, OH, PA, RI, VA, VT, WI, & WV) and basically says to have your Tacoma's frame inspected at a dealership no later than March 31, 2016. If significant rust perforation is not found, they will apply Corrosion-Resistant Compounds at no charge.

If "significant rust perforation" is found, they will provide an "appropriate remedy" at no charge.

Is there any documentation of this - Campaign number or anything to show the dealer when he denies the service. Thanks.

Limited Service Campaign E0D is on the bottom of the letter.

Edit: E0D is also listed in the My Vehicles section on the Toyota Owners web site.

Forgot I had done a camera inspection of my frame a while back. Think I did the drivers side 1st... Nothing really note worthy rust wise on the inside. As its been said/mentioned it appears its forming between the sandwiched steel.

Sooo... the next big question is if you already have extensive rust, do you wait for "significant rust perforation" or do you have the CRC coated over the rust?

Exactly my thought. I'm gonna hold out for a while. The letter said I'll have until march 2016 to get it inspected.

Well, if the frame is rotting from within (see attached picture where it looks like 'layers') how's the compound going to stop it??

    Here's another one-

The metal is rusting and delaminating from in between. How is that preventable/stoppable? I call it a manufacturing defect. Splashing some corrosion inhibitor is NOT going to fix it..

Just a thought: Would it do any good to weld metal over the manufacturing holes near the tires before coating?

Crawled back under the frame and took some more pictures.

First 2 are my gaping hole in the drivers side of the boxed frame:

Being an inquisitive individual, I stuck my hand in the hole and pulled out some frame pieces:

Then I stuck my iPhone in the hole:

Shot of the passenger side frame under the bed where the metal is delaminating:

Lastly, on a section of the passenger side frame below the door, I wire wheeled, brushed and sanded where the wheel and brush wouldn't fit. I primed the section, then painted it, 2 coats, of flat black paint. This picture is one month or so after:

You can my sloppiness applying the paint on the underside of the cab. Notice also the rusting spots on the underneath of the cab...

After a chance call to the dealership were I bought my Tacoma to discuss the email conversation with Toyota about Iowa's exclusion from the limited service campaign I was invited to have my frame inspected tomorrow by a Toyota rep who will be at the dealership inpecting several other gen2's. I was told that if the frame is "junk" they will be able to do something but will not be able to apply the CRC that is being provided to those in the covered states.

Not hoping for much but at least they are willing to look.
