Here are some pictures of mine. I made the frame out of scrap 2x4 and 2x6. The decking is scrap 3/4 plywood. I have a 4" pad I use for sleeping. It works great. Headroom is limited(I am 6'3")but it is comfortable overall.
The platform is 3 pieces of plywood I cut in half so I can lift any part to access storage below. I pull the right hand pieces to carry my mountain bike and I pull the rear left piece when I have my fridge. It is tight for sleeping when I have bikes and the fridge but it still works.

damn i guess you can not be a yota owner unless you actually use the thing for sweet adventures. i love the ideas that are flowing for storage and sleeping platforms. i dont have a yota i have a 2005 quad cab dakota with snugtop xtr topper i am slowly getting that thing adventure ready. i have a kuat bike rack, contemplating a kuat vagabond x basket for the topper. and i am currently building a sleeping platform and storage area.
i found this amazing sleeping / storage system that is insane. this builder is crazy he really made a livable system i may steal a few of his ideas. if this is not the best home made camper bed i dont know what else could be

Here's mine in scuba gear hauler mode. I installed D rings in the bed to ratchet strap the tanks down. The back 3rd of the platform can come out so I can carry a total of 12 tanks. The front part near the cab is on a piano hinge and can come up on its own.

I'm going to rebuild it in the fall to have a set if drawers for camping and road trips.

Man I really hate the bed of my DC now. I've got bed envy.

Anyone with a DC who's 6' or taller use their truck bed for sleeping?

This is the only reason I got the extended cab over the double. I would love to have back seats and all but I like the 6' bed more. I didn't want to go the route of the trail limo either.

I am hopping my next truck is a taco double cab long bed. I like my current dakota, but i dont love it the bed seems a bit too small. My crapy s10 seemed easier to load. I could fit 3-4and bicycles an gear, a quad, and many things. This smsller dakota bed is a pain at times.

    Just found this one-

I like this design. I'm on the fence between building a single large drawer or 2 smaller ones side by side.

I had been doing a lot of research on TW and all over the internet on sleeping platform designs and finally decided on a design. I got it all finished last week. It is certainly not the easiest, cheapest, or most simple build out there, but it seems the best for my uses.

All the posts, pictures, and ideas I found on TW were super helpful in my research. Athough this thread isn't super active, I thought I would post a few pics of mine to help those who come after me.

    photo21_zps503dcc0f_def36e72dc3e8658f64efaba8a997025b44595da.jpg

Here are the removable side boxes as I was measuring for a test-fit, before the top hatches had been cut-in.
    photo31_zpsfa585ad5_57402b9f2a4a8e7180073965ec00dc512327132b.jpg

And here she with construction complete. I decided to make the driver's front hatch door fully removable for easy access from inside, or through the topper window from the outside. The other hatches are hinged. Still need to poly, for protection from any rouge leaks, and carpet the top. Very happy with the result so far.

    Good luck!

Bah, I would really love to have a tall topper with side access like yours! What topper is that? Do you have a side shot of the entire truck?
    Great looking setup.

Ha, the topper is an old Leer topper, that I think is actually made for a Ranger for some other small truck as it is not a perfect fit. I searched and searched for a used one (not wanting to pay full retail at $2000+. I checked CL everyday and eventually found this one...for free. Nearly same color as the truck too. Keep searching. You'll find one.

    photo5_zps94c535f2_8ac4fe3fad6382fdc2ba473cb47347d333bbccd9.jpg

I had just picked up the topper, and threw it on for this pic. I had not seated it or adjusted it yet and you can really tell that it doesn't quite fit. Ignore the saggy rear end, new springs came shortly after.

I've had several wood frame platforms over the years, but on my current truck I decided to hang the platform to save storage space and weight.

I used clothes line hooks drilled through the rim of the cap, then put eye bolts into the ends of 3 cross braces of 2x6 wood.

You hang the 2x6s from the hooks, then slide the plywood in. The plywood is cut in two sections, so the back portion can be slid forward onto the front portion in order to use the back half of the bed for full-height storage when you're not sleeping. The best thing is the whole set-up can be installed or removed in under 10 minutes for when I need to use the truck for work instead of play.

I'm thinking about ditching my drawer system and using something like this. The drawers are super heavy and the drawers themselves take up a lot of space. Also I can take a drawer out and carry it to a campsite nearby like I can with bins.
