Gas mileage upgrading from 16 x7 stock wheels to 17 x 8.5 SCS wheels

    I have a stock 2012 v6 base prerunner 2wd double cab and I’m planning to upgrade my stock 16 x 7 wheels to 17 x 8.5 Stealth SCS wheels and was wondering if this will affect my gas mileage. I drive on the highway 50 miles a day so gas mileage is important. Below is my stock setup and what I plan to upgrade to. Will 4 pounds the extra weight make a difference. Any input is appreciated. Thanks.

    Stock wheel weight 16x7 : 32 lbs
    Stock tire weight 245/75/16: 23 lbs

    Total: 55 lbs

    SCS wheel weight 17 x 8.5 : 23 lbs
    Tire weight 265/65/17: 36 lbs

    Total: 59 lbs

    You will lose a little, probably like 1-2mpg. It's not just the weight, you going to taller tire. That weight for your stock tires doesn't seem correct. What tires are you looking at that are 36lbs?

    I went from stock wheels with 265/70/16 tires to SCS with 265/70/17 and I've lost about 1.5mpg. My tires are heavy though, might swap to something lighter to hopefully negate the loss in mpg a little.

    Thanks for the reply. I was looking at the Dunlop Grandtrek AT20 which was 36 lbs. according to tire rack.

    if you upgraded to a 265/70/17 it might help your mpg a little. at least it did with me. 40lb tires, with 27ish i think, maybe heavier 17x9in rims and i get 19-21mpg on the highway. your speedometer will be dead on also, but your odometer will be off a little. multiply how far your odometer said you went by 1.04 and thats how far you really went. doing that also shows your correct mpg again.

    You ae correct on the weight of that tire. The overall diamater is 30.47 on your tires now and the new ones 30.56 and with the new width only being about 3/4" wider you shouldn't loose much at all if any.

    You got your stock tire weight numbers flipped. Dunlop AT20 245/75-16 is 32 lb, not 23 lb.

    Putting it all together:

    Stock wheel weight 16x7 : 29 lbs
    Stock tire weight 245/75/16: 32 lbs

    Total: 61 lbs

    Conclusion: You might actually gain milage with the wheel/tire upgrade.

    Unless your now running LT compared to P rated tires i have those wheels and they are way lighter compared to my stock 17s. But when I put LT tires on I lost MPG from now on I am gonna keep P rated and save my LT for offroad and snow.
