My Recent TSB Experience

Ok so here is how it went. I know the sales manager at the dealership where I bought my truck, 2009 DC SR5 4X4 TRD Off Road. I found out about the rear TSB (here on TW) after I bought it and asked him about it (my VIN matched the TSB). He did a little research and told me to bring it in.

Once there they ordered the parts. He called me when they were about to install the new leaf packs. He said the new packs were the same as the ones they just took off. I immediately got on TW and started looking for the part #'s of the 4 leaf pack. I gave them the #'s and he said let me research and get back to you. He called back about 15 minutes later and said I had more info than the Toyota computer (thanks TW).

Anyway, this is what I believe to be the current status of the TSB. The current TSB replacement for the old 3 leaf pack is a different 3 leaf pack (the ones I had on my truck). He said evidently the factory had done the TSB. He ran the 4 leaf part #'s that I gave him and he was able to find them in Houston. The 4 leaf pack part #'s are not on the current TSB. He gave me the option of which ones I wanted ( which has sealed my loyalty to him and the dealership).

I went with the 4 leaf. I felt 4 is more than 3 or felt it would lift the truck a little more or felt Toyota went with the cheaper alternative. You pick.

I pick up my taco tomorrow. If anyone has any questions feel free. I'm pretty satisfied with the way things went and the choices I was given.

 

Sweet 5 minute phone call and I'm already scheduled to get the rear leaf TSB in the AM!!

Told the service dept that my truck was weak knee'd and that I wanted it to be all it could be.

They said no prob. Bring it in the AM we will have ya' done by Lunch!!

So....I also have my Toyotech AAL slated to go on this Monday with the rest of my lift. Do I even need the Toyotech AAL with the tsb or will it just sit even higher?

 

Lol...Good luck with the TSB in the AM...make sure you read the paperwork and check the part numbers. Most dealers don't have this shit in stock.

HOw are you lifting the front??

 

They have em' in stock but now I dunno if I want em!!

I have a set of 5100's for the front. They go on this Monday.

I already have a set of Pro Comp AAL's that were to go on Monday as well.

Figgered I would see if I could get all I could get so I called the dealer and they said they had the leafs and to bring it in the AM for the upgrade.

My next call was to Pro-Comp who said I should just use their AAL on the non-TSB springs.

Now I'm cornfused...Do I want the TSB spring and the Pro-Comp AAL?

Will the procomp AAL even fit the new springs? Rep at Pro comp said yes although I know the Toyotec AAL is in fact a different part #???

So Now I'm lost and need to figure out of I want the TSB springs or not.

 

They SAY they have them in stock. First time I went in "they had the springs going on my truck" and they were regular 3 leafs...NOT TSB springs.

I would vote for the TSB with the AAL. I have the wheelers 3 pack AAL on my TSB leaf pack with the overload leaf (7 leaves total) and I love it. The Toytec made a "TSB AAL" but the Non-TSB AAL fits with just a bit of trickery (like putting it in backwards or a bit fo grinding).

If the procomp guy says they'll fit...I'd at least give it a try. The TSB isn't MADE to be a lift...and depending on how high you want to go with the front....it may not get it all the way there.

 

Question, for my education:
I thought Wheelers 3 leaf Progressive AAL is supposed to replace the overload spring.
Am I mistaken? Apparently you have the option to leave the overload spring on?

I got my truck back today thank goodness. The loaner I had was a smurf blue camry.

The rear TSB is complete and sports the 4 leaf pack. Only thing is I forgot to measure my before and after heights. Could someone send my the pre TSB measurement for the 2009 DBL short bed SR5 TRD Off Road 4X4? Thanks in advance.

While it was in I also had them check the cowling on the driver's side. At around 75 or 80 it was vibrating against the windshield. They determined it was warped and put a new one on.

 

I passed on the TSB appt. Upon further review I determined too many guys were fighting vibration issues afterwards for me to even fool with it. I dont haul anything. Matter of fact my wife drives this truck to work everyday as I'm a Cummins Dodge driver and just dont ever use the Tacoma for anything heavier than my haul my 220# KTM to the trailhead on the rare occasion I'm not taking my Dodge.

That being said all I wanted was the lift....

I measured my Tacoma front and rear from the floor to the bottom of the fender using the center of the hub as a reference and came up with 35.2" front and 37.4" rear.

Monday my truck is scheduled to be 951 Moto-Metaled, 285'ed with BFG's Billied and Pro-Comp AAL'ed setting the front at 2.5" so my hopes is that it will measure out at 37.9 and with the 1.5 AAL on the rear 38.9" thats 1" of rake....I dont want anymore rake than that 1"...So if the TSB springs gave me say .75 after settling I would end up with the same factory looking 2" worth of ass high rake that I dont want....Combine that with an increased potential for undesriable vibrations via combining the 1.5 AAL with the TSB 4 leaf?

Hence I passed on the 4 leaf pack...For now at least..

I will take photos and measurements to share with the fellow Forumators Monday evening.

Stock with a TRD off road skidder for now....

 

Just picked up the truck with the Billies set at 2.5 and the pro-comp rear 1.5" leaf.

Using the same points of measuement the front is now 38" on the nose and the rear is 39" on the nose.

Truck still on stocker wheels and 265 BFG's as the UPS guy is out cruising around the hood with my wheels as I'm sposed to get them installed tonight at Disgruntled tire....

Needless to say the 5100 set at 2.5 do not ride rough like I thought they would they ride firm and actually really nice. The rear with Pro-Comp AAL is perfect and I'm glad I passed on the TSB springs as it would have had too much rake. I'm actually hoping the ass end settles a bit as its raked a tad much as it is.

So heres how she sets with the 2.5 Billies and the pro-comp AAL...Any higher in the rear would have made for an undesirable rake IMO.....Man I need the UPS guy to get his ass here before the tire joint closes!!



Will post photos and alignment sheets when the truck is completed.

Sorry I didn't get back to you soon enough. Looks like you were able to find what you were looking for though. Glad it worked out in the end. I like the way my truck rides now and much better towing an 18 ft. bay boat.
