4.0L 1GR 2nd Gen Oil Change Guide

The country where I live got temperature that never goes under 20 degrees Celsius but can go to 35 degrees Celsius. Should I use Mobil 1 5w40 or 5w30?

 

That's not very hot at all. Gets much warmer than that here in Texas in the summer. I use 5w-30 all year round. I wouldn't worry about changing from the recommended 5w-30.

 

Toyota has updated their oil filter part number for their 2014 v-6. The part number is 90915-20004. I did put the OEM oil filter, part number

$55 90915-YZZD3 Oil Filter 1 Case (QTY 10)

90915-YZZD3 on after measuring it with calipers and physically their the same. I did not however take it apart and check the bypass valve.

Yes. Everything was identical on the box and on the filter. The only difference was a slight change on the graphics of the oil filter box and the part number.

I have since driven 35-40 miles since my oil change this morning. I have no oil leaking from the pan or the filter mounting bracket and the level is unchanged. No visible or auditory indication that anything was different. When I started the truck afterwards the oil light went out within 1-2 seconds and it's running fine.

I hit the 800 mile mark on my Taco so I switched to synthetic. Mobil 1 5W-30.

 

That is not a new part number, that's the part number of the filter that comes on the 4.0L V6 from the factory. Don't know if they've been on there since 2005 but I know that filter has been around for a while, my 2012 came with it. Been using YZZD3 ever since my first oil change though. The 20004s are kind of hard to find I believe.

Does anyone have trouble ACCURATELY reading the dipstick level?

 

Take the dipstick out, wait ten minutes, then check. Otherwise, its tough to tell.

 

These are the toughest dipsticks to read a true level on that I have used. I will try your suggestion, thanks.

 

What can I do for my 4.0 when pulling the drain plug to keep it from being so forceful. Mine hits the pan and bounces right out for the first few seconds??

 

get a fumoto valve - just turn the lever

 

That's a good thing. Fast flow helps to flush solid metal particles out of the engine oil pan.

I usually take my Tacoma to the local stealership for an oil change because I'm too lazy to do it myself. However, after reading this thread, I thought I'd try it myself. Now, I don't think I'll let the dealership touch my truck anymore. They over-tightened the filter. I was using a clamp type filter wrench, and the filter was on so tight that it crushed the filter before it started budging.



Then, when I tried to open the oil filler cap, it was on so thightly that I had to use a pair of Channel Lock pliers to get it loose. I put a cloth over the cap so I wouldn't scratch it with the pliers. It was tightened over 1/4 turn past the point where I would consider it snug enough.

 

This is an excellent thread. I'm a firm believer in changing my own oil after a couple nightmares in years' past in having it done by 19-year-old "pros" -- e.g., stripped threads, failure to re-install a skid plate on my old GTI...

Having said that, Toyota should include this information in its owner's manual. I purchased my first Tacoma two days ago and I was surprised to learn that Toyota omits it from the manual. I'm actually wondering if I didn't receive a separate service manual? The larger owner's manual provides info on how to check and add oil, but nothing about changing it. That's disappointing. I simply wanted to know the recommended torque on the plug before switching the oil. Of course I couldn't find anything.

Do others' manuals include this info? Or, did you receive a service manual that I didn't?

Thank you chris4x4. That affirms my suspicion as to Toyota's motive in omitting it from the new manuals.

Believe me, I read the manual front to back and thoroughly perused the other manuals as well. Thanks to this thread and other secondary resources, I found the information I was looking for -- torque value and whether the 5/16" tube was ID or OD, etc...

Still, just a little disappointing. Toyota should anticipate owners wanting to change their own oil and you'd think they'd want us to do it the right way according to engineering specs etc... I think this is a case of marketing and accounting prevailing over the wisdom of engineering and customer relations.
