OEM vs Aftermarket Carrier Bearing

Hi there- Just wondering if anyone has any recommendations for a new carrier bearing. OEM is $212. Just looking to see if anyone has used an aftermarket and if they had good luck with it. Thanks for you help.

My carrier just went out. My local dealer quoted my $212 as well. There's basically 3 viable options for you.
#1: pay the price of your local dealer.
#2: parts.camelbacktoyota.com ($153 shipped from a dealer in arizona who does wholesale prices)
#3: go to google and type in "wookie strength carrier bearing mod." its basically a mod where you replace your stock bearing with a bad@ss carrier bearing thats not necessarily built for the job but it is very beefy and will probably last much longer at a cheaper price ($113 i believe). The only problem here is that they don't feature a rubber grommet like the stock ones do which has been known to cause excessive vibrations. Just look on that write up and read the comments and you will see.

FYI: I chose option #2. Ordered mine two days ago actually.

 

Thanks for the info. I will look into the camelback option. Priced one through my local NAPA and it was about $130. Are you replacing your Ujoints as well.

 

uh, there is solution number three...

get a $50 (or less) carrier bearing from one of several aftermarket manu's....inject 100% silicone into the three holes, let it dry for two days, install....

I am on year two with this mod, and I went with a new $43 carrier bearing that still vibrated before I injected the silicone, after injection and drying, smooth as glass....no shudder when accelerating, no vibration at any speed....

used this mod in the past on upper motor mounts (front wheel drive 4 bangers) that sag and vibrate, from droopage and loosness...decided I would give it a try and haven't looked back...

it ain't rocket science, many people posting here on TW about driveline vibrations could benefit from doing this simple injection with $6 worth of sillycone...

So what 3 holes are you injecting this in? Im on my second replacement one and would like to try this. Can you do this if its already on the truck and has been for about a year?

 

You have to do this with the driveshaft out of the truck because the silicon has to dry for a day or so. It is best if you take the bearing off the shaft, fill the hole (they are weep holes around the outer edge of the metal outer shell). For absolute best results you need to let the silicon dry (you need the real stuff, mineral spirits cleanup, not the water based stuff). I stuck the bearing in the oven at 150* to 200* and let it cure slowly. I turned the oven on and off about every 15 minutes, if it gets too hot, the silicon will ooze, you don't want that. Still using the same modified bearing I installed way back in 2013 or 2014, can't remember for sure the year...you do not want to install with the silicon not cured all the way...

To answer the question there are holes on the bracket that support the CB. By this time, I suspect the rubber of the CB has taken a set. You could drop the driveshaft and support the bearing tabs to put the weight on the other side, then silicone it and give it a day or 3 to cure.

Spicer is oem brand, I replaced mine already and they’re identical

 

Best to do this with a new bearing, by itself, not supporting any weight. Also, it is the best way to cure, bearing in oven as I stated before.

 

I guess my worry is that it becomes uneven in a few spots or im just over thinking it

 

Yup... did a little research after getting a price of $264 for a new carrier bearing from my local toyota dealership... no thanks. Spicer makes the carrier bearing for toyota. Found the dana spicer part # 5002007 (for my trd offroad) on ebay for $67. Just replaced it about 2 weeks ago with the oem part (even had toyota printed on the new bearing) and saved myself $200.

Are these legit? Seems like a crazy low price especially considering they’re including universals.

 

Not legit I sent mine back, carrier bearing isn’t spicer. I ordered the one thats on there now for $117. CB even says Toyota on it. I paid $150 a few months ago, so that’s good something went down in price. BTW this thread is from 2014

 

It says on the product description that the ujoints are Spicer and the center bearing is CBTT, an aftermarket.

 

The rock has the Spicer 5002007 for $79 then u can always find a 5% off coupon which then brings it down to ~$75.

 

Yes. You just don't pay the toyota price. Even the Ujoint is identical to the one you get from the dealer as they are the same manufacture that toyota gets it from. They just resale the OEM parts as their aftermarket parts.

It is just like if you have to replace the condenser on your truck. OEM from the dealer it will cost around $270.30-$387.60, but since denso makes the same part you can just buy it on rockauto from the same brand for $92.99.

 

$61 Spicer 5002334 Center Bearing

Spicer 5002334 is the non 4x4 version but works. It does not include a bearing seal. When I shopped for a replacement, that was the only one available and so I got that one. It was fifty bucks and is functioning as expected.

 

I have had the spicer carrier bearing (4x4) version) for 30k miles with no issues.

I did the spicer u joints at the same after I unintentionally smashed a needle bearing in the u joint trying to get it apart

 

Common , that's why it's best to do all at once. 3 u joints and carrier bearing.
