Eff'd up one of my black driver keys. Dealership wants $40 for new key + $90 to program. That's bullshit. Can a sporting individual buy a key from Toyota and program in themselves without disabling existing working keys? Dealer said that people that try end up disabling their other working keys in the process.

How badly bent is it? I bent mine pretty good on accident and just bent it back so it's "straight". Works fine.

Yeah, this key isn't coming back....What happened was my keys were clipped to a belt loop. I proceeded to sit down outside at one of those metal mesh type tables and the key tip wedged itself in. As I sat down, effing key bent. I straightened it back out as gentle as possible, but it will no longer go into a lock or ignition. I found a thread on here, but there was no resolution.

Bummer, sorry to hear. Gone are the days of going into Ace Hardware and making a duplicate key unfortunately. Good for security, but bad for times like these. Good luck!

Ace hardware can make you a replacement key for your truck, programming included. just go in and tell them that the truck has a chip key and they will get it made.

I know this may sound like a dumb question, but after locking my keys in my truck twice in a 3 week span I recently had a new key made to put in my wallet. All I need it for is to unlock the door if it happens again. I just wondered if you could start your truck with a standard key if you had your existing key on the same key ring?

On mine, I have to place both key heads together. Its not too big a deal, but annoying.

There's an 'amplifier ring' in the steering column behind the ignition switch. The chip in the key is close enough when the key is in to sense the information, and send the information to the computer to allow a start.
Don't want to lose your only master key (the chip part); if so, no more keys can be programmed.
For you model, visit a auto lock smith; maybe $75. will get you a new one including cutting and programming.
Keep your old busted key as the master, just in case....
(At purchase, I had an additional key made; dealer charged $125.00 for cutting the key and programming it into the computer.)

I did that too after finding out that Toyota discontinued valet keys. I negotiated mine after settling on price for vehicle. I was in a position of strength though. Final day of the month and they needed the sale real bad.

Yeah, they pinched me for the full amount $60.00 for a key and $65. for 1/2 hour of labor.

The trouble is folks don't realize that the VALET key (non-master w/ a gray handle v.s . black) is also to prevent copying/programming using a master key. So, untrustworthy valet invests a few bucks while you're away from your car, mold copies the key way and uses Techstream to program in a new generic chip key (about $25) with the master you left him.
Then he gets the cuts made, uses the additional chip now in the computer and your ride is gone at his convenience....AND he has a master to make more keys AND obtw, delete yours from the computer (can't even 'steal' yours back if you find it)!!!!
Toyota didn't help us much by saving the bucks.

isn't there a thread on here about how to program your own keys? I've read it I think but didn't sub it. A guy explains what to buy and how to program it yourself to save you a ton of money.

Check Amazon. My GF bought a used 4Runner that only came with 1 key and 1 keyless entry fob. The dealer was going to charge her over $120 for the combo. I think we got a key/fob off Amazon for less than 1/3rd the price the damn dealer wanted and I had zero issues programming both items and took less than 10 minutes to do.

My 2013 has no chip. Is it model specific?

Do you really need the smart key maker? I didn't when I did my GF's 4Runner. I just had to turn the key on/off and open/shut the driver door a bunch of times in sequence.

Can anyone confirm that the Smart Key Maker will work on a 2014? I have a key that I need to get working with my truck and have started calling around to se who can do it and how much but if someone can tell me this works, I might go that route and do it myself. Thanks.
