    I just cut that green/red wire and did not install the switch and tested everything, and it works. No more DTRL :kona:

    I too want to know what the drl line exactly does. I realize this is not an engineering forum so I don't expect people to question how things work and just simply accept things as is. But I'm sure there are quite a few other curious minds out there.

    I need to borrow a 12 pin flasher to reverse engineer this.

    I took your test one step further and used an oscilloscope. I only get really low voltage readings (I think these are just noise) when I examine the drl line.

    this is with headlights off

    the voltage level is less than 0.5v, so I can't say for sure these are actual signals and not just noise.

    I HATE the DTRL's so I was pumped to find this thread. Total newb when it comes to wiring so I have a question...

    After removing the coin tray I see that one of the harness plugs has a green/red striped wire, shown in my pic below. After re-reading the 1st page of this thread and see the pic, it says the wire is found in a plug on the BACK of the fuse block. The wire I found is in a front plug....please someone let me know if what I have is the correct wire or not before I cut...thx

    The wire is on the back side of the fuse block. IIRC looking at it from the rear it's on the top right, I laid on my back & looked up at the backside.

    In my 09, that wire was apart of a harness with 3 different plugs on it. I just unplugged all those and took the harness to my kitchen table and made everything a whole lot easier.

    Thanks guys...I knew what I found was too easy:p I'll see if I can pull the one from the backside. I just want to cut the darn thing to be rid of them.

    Update - I am way too fat and my head is way too big to get my ass anywhere near seeing the back of that fuse panel........

    2nd update....finally was able to contort myself enough to get to the wire and give it a clip. I just wanted them gone so I just taped them off - no switch for me.

    Thanks for the write up on this. I am going to get going on this mod soon.
    I have a couple of questions before I start dismantling my dash and snipping wires.
    I have the DRL set up along with a oznium rocker switch that I am going to splice in before plugging it in.

    Once I get this done, I am planning to switch out the bulbs with some of Jumpers LEDs (switchback specifically) so I don't get the melting lens mod.:)

    - Will the on/off switch affect anything with the switchback LEDs, that you know of? I will ask Jumper too, if you don't.

    - What gauge wire would I use to splice the switch in?
    - Where would one find the Molex type connector that you used, if one does not have resources in their shop?
    - Do you think a place like RadioShack have this stuff?

    This is my first real electrical system mod to the truck, so I am trying not to fahk anything up and I really trust and respect your work.

    No. Should not affect anything. I spliced LED's into my turn signal circuit 5 years ago. Work great to this day.


    22- 26 AWG is a good guess, it's whatever gauge Toyota is using in the wiring block.

    Search Amazon for "2-pin connector" you'll see plenty of options. Light weight connectors are good for this project. I harvested mine from an old computer fan.

    Did mine this past weekend. With I would have done it years ago. I wouldnt be on my 3rd set of headlights. At least I have some new ones coming in at the dealership for free.

    Thanks to all of the previous posters. The mod was quick and simple. I put the rocker up by the fog light switch and tapped into an unused fuse on the block to power the LED in the switch.

    Alright, I'm banging my head on my dash hard on this one. I'm hoping that I'm just missing something simple. Here's what I did:

    I followed this write-up pretty closely. First, I ordered a 3-pin fin wire extension cable, cut the wires in the middle and connected it to itself. I can take a picture of that if it's confusing in any way.

    I found the green/red wire and cut it. Then stripped a little off the end, twisted the stripped cable with some of the new extension wire that had been stripped together. I wrapped the connections with electrical tape to help keep them from getting pulled and keep them protected.

    I then soldered the other half of the extension cable to the switch. I connected the two ends and nothing.

    My ultimate objective was to turn off the DTRLs, which happened, so I left it like that for a while. Now, I'm cleaning up some projects that I've left unfinished so I'm trying to get this one so that it works.

    I thought maybe the switch was bad, so i cut the wire and twisted it together. No DTRLs, so not the switch. Then I figured I needed to check the connections under the dash since they are hard to reach. They were in tact. So I figured the only other point of failure would be the connection in the middle.

    I have some 20ga. wire from another project. I decided to eliminate the 3-pin extension cable all together. I put quick connectors on one end to connect to the switch and a butt plug connector on the other end. I crimped the connector onto the other end of the 20ga. wire and made sure it was tight. I then went under the dash and got it connected to the green/red wire. Still nothing.

    As of right now, I'm relatively certain that I have good connections under the dash. I'm even more certain that I have good connection to the switch. There is no quick disconnect in the middle of the wire.

    Any thoughts or suggestions are welcome!
