If anyone is interested in build it yourself 1st gen coil overs for sub $1k check this out (2nd gens would need to fab/find a top adapter plate, and mod the bottom of the shock; see this thread: http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/su...vers-oem-replacement-use-2nd-gen-tacomas.html).

    -FOA 2.5: http://f-o-a.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=6:d9ed816076b88c184532744853812fd0 - ~$490 ($350 non resi)
    -FOA 2.0: http://f-o-a.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=23:ef94d0d96668ef955bae9b4c9fe7c31e - ~$400 ($320 non resi)
    -Top Space Adapter: http://slickanddirtymotorsports.com/?page_id=632 - $150
    -3.0 ID 14" springs: http://offroadwarehouse.com/products/sfID1/12/sfID2/1135/sfID3/1182 - $175
    Total 2.5" Coilovers (Resi): ~$815
Total 2.5" Coilovers (Non Resi): ~$675
    Total 2.0" Coilovers (Resi): ~$725
Total 2.0" Coilovers (Non Resi): ~$645

*Might need to strap your front end with the 2.5" coilover though as the shortest option is still about 2" longer than the stock specs. 2.0" length is just about perfect.

Brent, how hard would it be to fab the top plate? These guys want $150 which I think is pretty steep. I was thinking about using these to cut costs even more:
    http://www.ruffstuffspecialties.com/catalog/COIL-TOPMP.html
    http://www.ruffstuffspecialties.com/catalog/STAB-FLT.html

    or even this:

    http://www.ruffstuffspecialties.com/catalog/STOWER975.html

This might help mount longer shocks but the UCA may get in the way.

Damn. $150 is a bit high for those if you ask me.
True, but $1100-1200 is a bit too much. Ill probably stick with the 2.0 resi. Better than what I have which is getting old.

I was talking to the guy at ruff stuff specialties who said they were great shocks and has seen people compete with them successfully. He's building a crawler with their coilovers currently :notsure: Pretty much what sold me on them.

It comes down to, do you have the time and/or know how to fab, assemble, and tune them vs. shelling out the money for something that's a full package of the above mentioned items.

Those are not overpriced in my professional opinion when you consider r&d, material, overhead, marketing, labor, etc.

Consider my bumper, if I added all the costs up material, my design time, the labor of those that graciously donated their time and assistance, etc. I could have bought two pelfrey bumpers but I wanted something I designed and built. Looking back I should've spent the money, not because I don't like my bumper, but I have no one to bitch too about the flaws.

The item you have there in bold is for a separated coil spring suspension set-up (i.e. rear suspension or a stock car) - not a coil over shock set-up. It is called a jack plate and is designed to hold the top of the spring in place, some other designs include a cup for the spring to sit in. That bolt in the middle is used to adjust ride height.

The third item is a complete shock tower replacement (talk about creating more problems). You'd be better off just buying the top plate adapters and mount them up... instead of blowing time fabbing and recreating something that's already available.

The same holds true for me and my bumber build... I didn't like any of the designs available and I like to build to fit my needs and with my design.
If there had been a bumper I liked for the 2nd gen Runner, I would have paid for it and spent my winter doing something else fun.

While I had a lot of fun doing it and I learned a lot in the process, you have to weigh how much your time is worth.

Now having said that I do still plan to build my own rear bumper, sliders and skids. Because again, I don't like any of the designs currently on the market.

It was a ruff stuff suggestion to use the plate with the tabs :notsure:
Since these guys are a two Man team, I don't by any means think it's a rip off. I guess what I'm trying to say is it can be done for much cheaper :notsure: I just wanted to explor other options. Engaged off-road used to have a similar product for less than 100...

I like the 9.75" shock tower but I'm not sure it will work with the uca's. All off the ruff stuff porducts are for sas builds. I think I need to learn to weld...

But before we get too far down this rabbit hole and I start getting Linwood's shit for the turbo I got an oil pan today to instal the oil return bung. Gonna have to do the turbo install before new front suspension.
