What kind of racks are you using? I'm having trouble finding anyone that shows a model for a gen 1 Tacoma. Everything that I come across is usually 05 and newer. I've thought about going the route of buying something like a Thule or Inno Rack but their weight capacities are kinda low. After building a rack and and attaching things light lighting and attaching that to a thule or inno base, I wouldn't have much capacity left for actual cargo.

Bummer. i was starting to suspect so. Finding them has been impossible. I found an Inno base system comes with the 4 legs and 2 rods, its a bit pricey but it says its good for like 150lbs. might be the only option, that or custom fab something that i can weld on to the bedrack and have it extend over the cab.

how did the front runner ones mount? anybody have a closeup of that? bolt on? drill on mounts? i need something also and have been thinking about just doing some yakima rails mounted to the roof and build a rack off of that.

The link posted above is a copy if the front runners.

Adam(Boxrocket) bought one of the last set of the front runner feet and built his own if you have seen photos of his. He ended up selling it. He has some good close up photos of it

It was bolt on. Used a clamp system off the door jams and big support rails.

Here's the photos of my old one before I sold it. Custom rack on top of Front Runner rails.

Forgot to mention this this had great load capacity and was rock solid. I could stand on the rack and jump up and down and it wouldn't flex or move the roof panel at all. The Front Runner rails spread the entire load over the very strongest part of the roof out at the corners where there is a body crease and is very rigid.

on those, is the cross section a upside down T with a rubber bottom? is it just bent steel or welded to make that T? are they alu or steel? how thick is that rubber?

Yes is was an inverted "T" that is welded. The rails are steel. The rubber feet was the reason that Front Runner discontinued this item. That rubber extrusion was expensive and wasn't cost effective to manufacture. IIRC the rubber was 3/4" thick with a channel that the "T" slid into.

How much would you expect to spend to make a one of those racks now?

Wish I had some factory rails. Which was the only year to have these as an option. Was it "04"?

Ive got a bunch of pieces of tube laying around the garage. i'm still debating making a rack that attaches to my bed rack and doesn't physically touch the roof of the truck. I'll probably only come 1/2 to 2/3 the length of the cab if i go that route...

I've heard of those ever elusive gen 1 Tacomas with roof rails. I think i would have better luck finding a unicorn at this point though. or a Megalodon

will do, but i am betting his answer would be that he cant do it, as the file belongs to that other guy.
depending on how much the part is to cut, i would say less than 300 bucks into it.
