This rotor runs out about .012 is that too much? I am measuring at the very edge of the rotor, not the face where the pads make contact.

I called the dealer, he's going to call an engineer Monday.. thoughts?

I was going to attach a video, but the size restriction stopped it.. not sure how to post it at this point.

    Thanks!

That usually won't cause vibration, changes in thickness or warping will. My wife's 4Runner only had .006" of warping on the rear rotors and it vibrated horribly while stopping.

Exactly how and when are experiencing the vibration? My MIL just bought a new Rav 4 and was experiencing a vibration at various speeds, Toyota could not correct it. I took it to
Firestone and explained the problem, 3 tries and they nailed it, it was a tire balance issue, they broke the tires down and rotated them on the rims and rebalanced them. MIL hasn't had one complaint, in fact I bought my tires from Discount Tire and had them mount and balance, bought the warranty from them and then had Firestone rebalanced them. I had a slight vibration between 70-75mph on the freeway.

No vibration when stopping, it's a pretty bad vibration at highway speeds that intensifies above 70 mph. Long story, the short version.. Many things have been attempted to eliminate the vibration, Toyota gave up and called it a characteristic, so now I'm stuck trying to resolve it on my own.

    Ahhh ok
Out of round on the edge .012 won't do anything for a vibe going down the street. A bent hub, rim, etc will.

I won't get into what your willing to accept or not or if it is normal or not.
    I'm not driving your vehicle.
Sorry you are unhappy with your purchase.
Not a good position to be in.
I did read a few things in the thread but I don't remember seeing if you drove another like vehicle to yours to compare with the principals involved.
That would be my only addition to try and help you.

Yeah, I don't believe this should be classified as normal or acceptable.
    Nope, not happy at all.
You're right, really difficult position to be in.
I did drive 2 other access cab PreRunner's after the fact. One didn't vibrate as bad as ours and the other one was worse. I have driven a double cab and 4X4 since then, the vibration was not present in either vehicle.
So this leads me to believe there is an issue with the Access cab PreRunners's.

I do appreciate your input and do realize it would not be in your best interest to implicate Toyota in any wrong doing..that being said..

What would be Your best guess why this vehicle is experience severe vibration at highway speeds? Tires have been road force balanced multiple times, re-balanced trued drive shaft.. no suspension components are damaged.. So what would cause this vibration? If it were your vehicle, where would you look next?

    Thanks for your time.

I've had to play with vibes from other manufactures. No company is exempt.
What I think is happening is milti second order vibrations.
Now I can tell you on my own vehicle.
    Mine vibrates.
    Always has.
I have made it better with the TSB upgrades.
    I have a 35 to 45 vibe. And 15 mph vibe.
    It is what it is.
I knew they had vibe issues when I bought it.
If I was to do an experiment (which I did) I would pull the rear shaft and lock it in 4wd and send her down the highway and see if the vibes go away.

In my own situation the vibes are gone.

I do understand that no mass produced product/vehicle is without flaws.
Unfortunately, I didn't realize it had a vibration issue till the ride home..

If you have the time, can you elaborate on second order vibrations?

Mine is a PreRunner, best I could do is to get it up to speed and place it neutral.. vibes still exist.

    Thanks again for your time.

    Crap a prerunner.
Second and third order vibrations are nothing more than vibrations that cancel each other out or create a 3rd freq. vibe. That's the best way I can describe it.
I'm not up on the technical hoopla so getting that would be in your best interest to search for the answer that you can understand better.
To be honest prerunner vibe issues I have not seen that have not been taken care of with tire balance or replacement in new vehicles.
    That being said.
I did have one older access cab that had a vibe in the whole truck at higher speeds.
It wasn't a high rpm vibe. More tire tire speed.
I found excessive runout in one of the axles.
It would still feel like a tire balance issue.
Put that baby up on the lift and run it and I could see the tire wobble.
Not a lot but enough to feel it in the seat.
That's all I got for YA.
    :notsure:

Mike, thanks for the info.. I will research the definitions of the the vibrations.

Hmmmm.. we may be onto something here.
I did notice that the stock tire/wheel did have a bit of wobble, it was the drivers side. I should have looked closer at it when I rotated them.

I bought a set of 17" Toyota wheels with decent used tires. Then I took it to an alignment shop. The tech did a ride along and said he could start to feel the vibration in the seat and floor around 45 mph, and 60 mph is was very noticeable and 75 mph + was pretty bad.
We went back to his shop, they jacked up the rear, I started the truck and placed it in drive. He pointed out the wobble on the drivers side rear tire. They suggested I get new set of tires and then come back for further testing if the tires didn't fix the vibration.. it didn't, of course.

I had new set of tires installed on the 17" wheels, they road forced balanced, same vibes. I figured at this point I should be taking photos/video of everything since I'm having trouble recalling every single detail. The video of both rear tires clearly shows the drivers side has a noticeable wobble.

Since I'm going to a different Toyota dealer tomorrow morning so the service manager give it a feel, I re-installed the stock tires/wheels, so all original components are on the truck. Before I head over to the dealer, I'll jack the rear end up and shoot some video of the tires spinning.

In your opinion, how much "wobble" or runout is too much?

Thanks again for your help, Mike.

There are specs on the balance machine for road force and runout.
Axle runout is a spec also.
But if a rim/tire combo runs nice and true on one side and you switch to the other and there is a noticeable wobble and every combo does the same its not to hard to start looking at axle.
Just let them do their thing...
