I’m pretty active, bike, snow board, fish ect.. I’m looking to get a roof rack to hull my new kayak and other toys. What could handle more abuse the stock Toyota roof rack or an after market like a Thule or Yakima? I like the stock due to the hide away cross bars and I’m thinking the Yakima would be a little noisy. But the stock looks a bit flimsy so I’m a little lost.

    Thoughts?

Anyone? Also is the taco gutterless or does it have a gutter? I'm thinking it has a gutter but want to make sure.

The Taco has gutters. Look at the roof of a VW CC for an example of the opposite approach.

I've been thinking about a roof rack for my kayaks and would rather go with the Toyota rack... simply because I prefer the look of them over an aftermarket setup.

It is my understanding that the Toyota racks are only rated for 80 lbs. but I saw an installation post and the guy said the documentation stated 100 lbs.

My kayaks are ~40 lbs each, so if the Toyota racks are rated for 100 lbs. I may go that route.

The kayaks are the only thing that I would need to put on the roof... everything else can go in the bed. I really like what SnoBoarder did with his rack on the bed of his truck. Check it out here:

I've heard good things about the Yakima. Not too sure about Thule, etc.

I've had my Thule on since March 2007 no issues or noise with the fairing. Its on 24/7, had 3 Wilderness kayaks (150lbs) up there but usually its just two & using J-Hulls. I throw my skis & boards under the tonneau, don't like the salt exposure.

I liked how you could stow away the bars. It was quieter as well. The Yakima fairing wasnt the quietest.

Yeah, since I have some what of a hookup for stock parts I think I'll be going with the stock rack. Either that or get a hitch and bed extender and just transport the kayak stuck out 9 food. The only issue I have is i'll be pretty hard for me to load it on to the top of the cab all by myself.

Yeah I saw that already, I dont like the look of the full bed rack and I can't remove it and store it when i'm not using it.

I know this isn't a roof rack & you don't want a full bed rack but these will hold 450lbs of whatever you wanna haul, can be adj down to bed level, off & on truck in 5 minutes & are very storable when not in use. They are a bit pricey but much more secure hauling 2 12' kayaks on the highway than the J shaped racks on the factory racks on my car are by far...
