Need to put new brakes on the truck. I'm most likely going to order a kit through one of the group buys. Just need to get it installed on my truck. Any recommendations on a shop in the San Francisco area that will install new pads and rotors that weren't purchased through the installation shop? Want somewhere that will do honest work and won't break the bank for install. Thx!!!

Most shops won't warranty their work if you didn't purchase the parts through them. However, if it is a brand I am familiar with, I will extend the courtesy.

On a 1st gen, at least:
Front disks are REAL easy, including rotors.
Rear shoes are a REAL pain, especially if you haven't done it before.

So you may want to consider doing the front your self, and having a shop do the rear.

    so just the fronts?

the fasteners in the back of the rotors can be a challenge. mine were frozen..and i was trying this in the winter, so my enthusiasm was very much diminished. i busted my knuckle once..and tapped out. my shop did it for very little money. that very same fastener is a chip shot with the truck on a lift. :) if it was summer, i would have finished the job..hahah. i wussed.

good luck. where are you located? you have the tools?

Are 2nd-gen rotors different than 1st-gen? There were no 'fasteners' on my '99. The rotors were just held on by the lug-nuts.

Yeah, I'm just changing out the fronts for now. I'm located in san Francisco. It looks easy enough but I've been down that path before...looks easy and it turns into a 8 hour project....lol

I was recommend by EBC to get the brakes done with the "pro-cut" on vehicle brake lathe to reduce break in time and any issues with brake vibes.. I didn't get it done this time because the shop I went to claimed my brake like was in the way of their machine. so hoping in 5-10k miles I don't end up with brake vibes again. I was also running the EBC stage 5 Kit, currently on the same rotors but with the Extra Duty pads.

So I finally got the EBC stage 4 kit installed this past Saturday. Everything was a breeze except for getting off the old rotors. I started another thread in the 2ng gen section to get some help on how to get off stuck rotors. here's the link http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/2nd-gen-tacomas/351957-need-help-changing-rotors-brake-pads.html

So far so good...taking it easy to break them in according to EBC procedure.

I didn't do the "pro-cut" to reduce break in time so hopefully I don't get any vibes.
