Bug Deflector Question

Hey guys,

I am looking on eBay at bug deflectors for my Taco. I see one for a fairly reasonable price and the thumbnail for the item shows a 2010 Tacoma, but the compatibility chart says it is not compatible for 2011 and earlier Tacomas. I've contacted the seller but I am afraid he might not know, so I thought I'd ask y'all. Would the 12-15 bug deflector work on my 2010? The shape doesn't seem a whole lot different, but I could be wrong. Don't see many other options on eBay, looks like most of the ones I see are for '12 and later.

 

Probably not because the hoods are a little different. That said, you could make it fit if you aren't afraid of drilling a few holes.

 

A few holes wouldn't be so bad. That being said I'll probably still try to find one that would actually fit. Thanks!

 

If you are hell bent on a bug deflector, make sure and buy oem.
There have been many issues of noise, paint wear, installation issue, etc, on the aftermarket deflectors.
I would imagine they are a bit more in price but well worth the piece of mind.

 

This is exaclty right. On the 2011 tacoma that I had, it came with the oem bug deflector. It uses braces that sit against the hood, but aren't attached to the hood. As you drive the deflector flexes and the feet on the braces rub the paint.

If you go with that one, it would be best to put something like a clear 3M tape adhered to the hood where the feet will sit to protect the paint. They may still wear off with time though.

 

Thanks for the advice. If I can find an oem in my price range (AVS is the top choice so far) I'll probably go with it, unless there is some significant flaw. Aftermarket seems a little bit shady, with the possible paint chafing and rubbing, but I guess that could also go with the OEM.

I cannot for the life of me find a black one, though. All of the ones I've seen for 2010 are smoke. So what do y'all think about a dip job? Would this be a feasible option, or would it not be the best decision? I'm afraid smoke wouldn't look right with my black & silver theme.

I've had an AVS brand bug deflector on my '14 for a year now and have no complaints. It survived the New Hampshire winter last year and still looks good as new.

 

Completely forgot about the WT deflector. Great company. I had oem on my last 2 Tacoma's with no issue at all. But, if I were in the market I would def consider the WT. Looks great. Dick.

 

Here's the smoke AVS. It's not completely black, but it's very dark. It comes with some heavy duty clear silicon tape to protect any areas where there might be chafing. It's only noticeable if you're looking for it. After a year of new hampshire weather, pressure washing and car washes it still looks like new.

 

Stay away from the OEM one. I have the AVS one on mine. Mounts under the hood and wraps around. Works perfectly.

 

Although holding an honorary position currently I was sanctioned back in '09 but lost my position in '11 to a involuntary physical condition that was caused by a speeding yellow missile and opiates soon after coursing through my veins.

here's a pic of the AVS smoke on my silver. i'm happy with mine. no chafing or noise.

 

Mine's the same color but with black accents (fender flares, bumper, etc.). Looks great, can't wait to install it!
