Went hard in the rocks this weekend and bent my driveshaft

 

Did you hit the rocks with it or what?

 

Been there done that...


How bad???

If you bent the drive line like a towel, it is like 200 bucks to get it retube with a middle Universal joint.

Just quoted 180 for the rebuild and balance, not bad at all. It will be done Friday.

Not too bad but I'm heading up to Sedona in two weeks to do Broken Arrow. I've got the monies now and time off work for the holidays.

 

Ouch ! You guys need a drive shaft skid, I just tried to find the link for you but I can't find it :/ The one I saw was a full diff/third and drive shaft slider

 

They really don't work out too well generally

 

Its the price to play with this level of trail difficulty. I was being kind of hard on myself about it since it happened but I know the risks.
I knew Elvis was going to be gnarly and different from last year after the monsoon floods. I will say that I need a locker really bad, LSD is good but this would've made the difference for a few obstacles.

 

lockers make it safer and less strain on the vehicle. No wheel hop.

 

This is what kept me from making it up one obstacle that the others could do and I did last year. The trail had changed drastically from last year because of the monsoons we had. Anyways, it was a lot of fun and once again the little drop bracket that could went where many won't.

Looking good Matt! Makes me kinda wish I kept my brackets for the oem roof rack..Looks like it turned out well. Those mirrors are starting to grow on me They pretty awesome folded in

 

Thanks man...i ended up making my own brackets...I've got under 20 bucks in everything...and the mirrors are where it's at

 

Makes me want to put my bar on my new truck. I want to make new brackets though.

It is important to remember a couple of things :

1. If you buy a new leaf pack and you get your angles right you will have to re adjust your angles after the leaf pack settles. It is not uncommon for a leaf pack to settle up to 1" and when driveline angles need to be within 1 degree that is a big deal. A rubber cased carrier bearing like ours hides a lot of these issues but ultimately it kills it. ( edit - kills the bearing )

2. To me it looks like our driveline has a built in compound angle because it is not a straight line from the rear axle to the transfer case. Lay under the back of your truck and look down the drive shaft... The t case is offset on the drivers side a bit huh ? Unless I am reading the info wrong compound angles are a big problem in a driveline...

 

Well that's a relief. Laying under my truck the other weekend I notice the drive shaft looked crooked? Slightly towards the transfer case. I guess that's answer.. I kept trying to move the carrier bearing, thinking maybe I shifted it to one side too much after I installed the spacers.

Here is the solid carrier bearing I mentioned last week, just got it on a couple days ago. I have a couple of vibes that I can hear feel around 25mph and 55mph but I think if I get all of the angles right it will be fine. The most noticeable difference is that the drive line feels so much more solid ( go figure huh ) under hard acceleration.

One thing someone mentioned to me that makes a lot of sense is that the lift we have in the back basically puts the slip yolk at its intended maximum extended position just sitting at our ride height and the imbalance or wobble can occur at the slip yolk as it becomes more unstable the more extended it gets...but you can't extend the rear shaft unless you want to put in some big ass bump stops and give up compressed length...damnd if you do damnd if you don't.
