I have a 2010 trd OR automatic. I used the snowstorm that hit here the other day to test out all the features in this truck. I had the truck in plain 4 hi, I didnt push any other buttons and turn off any of the traction controls. I went to a hill and started climbing it. What is the noise that you hear that sounds like abs brakes/clicking when the tires are spinning? What feature is this, and what is it doing? This is my first 4x4 so im still learning.

toofish, I have been doing a lot of reading/asking about the features and think I am finally figuring it out. What makes it confusing is all the different terms like a-trac, lsd etc. This is what I am understanding thus far. If you put your truck in 4hi, you have two options. The first is just straight 4hi ( without pressing the button with the truck and squiggly lines behind it) The instrument panel will only have the green 4x4 indicator lit up. You are now in four wheel drive WITH limited slip differential, meaning when you are in a tough situation and wheels start slipping, traction control kicks in and diverts power to certain wheels to prevent wheels from burying themselves etc. The clicking noises you hear is the traction controls working. This mode of 4x4 should suit most of your needs. The second option is 4hi without the traction controls. To do this, switch into 4hi, go into neutral, and hold down the button with the squiggly lines. That same picture will indicate on your panel. This is 4x4 with an open differential, meaning all four tires are free to spin without traction control interfering. The other buttons are used in 4 Lo. When you switch to 4 lo, the truck has an open diff unlike 4 hi. To get traction control in 4 lo, you have to push the a-trac button by the cigarette lighter. The rr diff lock button is also used in 4 lo. Once in 4 lo, go into neutral and hit the button. You will see a flashing red light. You will need to roll forward or back to lock the rear diff, and the flashing will stop indicating you have locked the rear diff, meaning both back tires receive equal power. This is used to get the best traction possible in tough situations. The last button is the downhill assist button. In 4 lo, go into neutral and push the button. You will see the indicator. This feature is used to keep the truck moving slow going down a steep hill, without you having to use the brakes so you can concentrate on steering. This is a lot to learn and I am still learning about this truck. Feel free to correct me on anything I said.

Good morning... the 4WD Off Road truck has 9 choices of traction control and no traction control... and in 2012, they added one more!

This is the clean, one page post on the choices: http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/2n...-controls-trac-auto-lsd-trac-rear-locker.html

The DAC is engaged or disengaged in L4, but NOT in Neutral... just in gear. It is for safely rolling downhill in rough, rocky grades. Going into neutral would be dangerous if your brake failed. Just press the DAC button and take your feet off the pedals, and trust the truck! Scary but works!! You can hit the brakes (or gas) but then the DAC is disabled.

In 2012, H4 TRAC was changed to have engine output regulation, as it does in H2. They added TRAC OFF for traction control without any regulation (which is what TRAC in H4 was before 2012). To have TRAC OFF in H4, just press the VSC button quickly, moving or stopped.

In L4, just press the A-TRAC button once... and after that, every time you go into L4, the A-TRAC will be 'active' and standing by. There is NO reason I can think of to be in L4 without A-TRAC. The traction control in H4 is so good, it will out-climb L4 if the A-TRAC is off.
