2009 Access Cab Sub Enclosure?

Hey guys, I've been crawling around on these forums now for a couple of days and it has been really informative, but there seams to be one thing that I cant quite find the answer to. Sub boxes. Has anyone found a way to get a ported sub box in the back of their access cab? I found a sealed one at super crew sound but to my limited understanding... isn't ported better? At least for rock/metal and the occasional dave mathews? I'm kinda going for the "OEM" look, but I dont have the money for a stealthbox (college.). That and I was thinking that maybe a 8'' sub would be just fine?

I'm really new to this whole car audio selection and installation process so feel free to make any suggestion that's relevant or not. =)

Ported vs sealed sub box arguement has gone back and forth for a long time in the car audio world. Go to www.jlaudio.com they have a basic sub enclosure pro's and con's section, there is no one "best" box.

For access cabs it's really difficult to design and fabricate an enclosure that doesn't take up precious rear seat volume. A couple of guys have built enclousures which fit between the rear seats to the edge of the center console. The rear seats are still usable but don't plan to lay anything across the seats.

JL's stealthbox as expensive as it is, provides a great compromise. You lose your center console storage but is the least intrusive for cabin volume that I've seen.

However, if you're after some pounding bass, I'd find a 10" sub or larger.

 

im not a fan of the jl console sub, it takes your console space and apparently doesnt sound good. I also do not believe that a ported box would sound good in our trucks, we sit to close to where the box would be and you would be able to hear the air coming out. If you want a good solid thump I always go with sealed.

I as well am looking for a good sub enclosure for my access cab. check out super crew customs, they make some boxes for our trucks. I would get one but the shipping is just too much to canada.

 

If you're willing/able to fabricate, I built 1 that fits behind the dr. seat. You do lose the rear fold down, but you get a good flat surface for cargo. I covered it with trunk carpet but don't have pics of the finished piece.

Here is my solution. I was not so much concerned with "OEM look" as with preserving my ability to lay large items (like golf clubs) across the cab. It also can be removed in a minute or 2 if I ever need 100% of the space. It doesn't show in the picture but I have a short quick disconnect nylon strap that snaps onto a bracket I screwed into the top rear of the box and connects to the LATCH anchor to keep it from tipping forward.

I'm only offering JL as another option, either way you will lose interior volume it just depends on where you want to lose the space. The statement, "apparently doesn't sound good." from whom, have you listened to the stealthbox?

 

I cant remember who it was but I had made a thread about sub boxes in the past as I am still on the hunt for one I like, anyways they said that they had heard it and for the money and console space lost its not worth it. And if i know JL which I do cause I used to sell and install JL, they are expensive. I wouldnt be surprised if that lil sub and box is over $500

 

I am pretty sure that the stealthbox is $499 with a W3 installed. which is rediculous.

Yeah, the box is expensive, never said it wasn't. It all depends on how folks utilize the center console and what's more important rear seat space or console. I'm curious as to the enclosure size of the stealthbox.

 

8" L5 ... total access to rear seats and storage ... black carpet looks outta place now, but wont soon

your rear seats are not the same as my 05. Mine extend into the center area and have a little tray to hold stuff, so that design would not give me access to the storage area. and my seats fold the opposite direction. What year is your truck?

 

I'd like to do something with my access cab but don't wanna hog up any space back there. So I'm pretty limited. I was thinking trying to do a shallow mount sub under the front passenger seat, don't know that there's enough room though.

As far as ported vs. sealed I had both in my Impala SS, in that scenario the ported sounded infinitely better across all types of music. Obviously a lot of variables though.

 

yeah if you have a trunk ported will sound alright, also mxboy this thread is for 2009's and that is most likely whats in the picture they have different back seats.
