Key Reprogramming/Programming Original Keys

I recently had to get a Locksmith to come to the airport and make me a Key for my car on the stop. The key he made works but now my old keys don't work anymore.

Is there a way to get my old keys working again? Anyway to reset the car key memory or anything on that sort?

Yes. All keys and fobs must be inside the car while the programming is done.
Look up a TW member neneago to get the programming instructions, and if you'd like an all-in-one key with the fob chip inside. I got one for my Tacoma and another for my wife's Element. two cars with two keys and two fobs was took much junk in my pocket!

 

On a '14 TRD Sport, I believe you have to use Toyota Techstream via the OBDII port, unless that locksmith is trying to copy the chip in your key.

Is there a G stamped in the metal of the key? Mine has the G, and I couldn't find a locksmith to do it, so I ended up buying an OBD Cable and Techstream CD from an ebay seller to program mine. I refused to pay the dealer $100 to do it for me.

I'd ask the locksmith what they did.

 

I've never heard this information before. It doesn't sound right. You program keys and fobs one at a time. Unless you intentionally wipe the memory, you don't automatically lose what's already paired with your vehicle.

nenenago did use a techstream for my new key, but he cautiioned that all keys must be in the car at the same time. I'm so tech challenged that I took my tacoma to the guy and just watched him, not wanting to screw up all my keys and fobs Any further explanation on this should come from neneago himself, all I know is he did good for me!

 

The locksmith said that he didn't wipe out the memory and my old keys should work. But when I turn the key the car just makes an attempt to start but it doesn't actually get to start.

I called the dealer and they wanted $105 to program the keys and a local locksmith wants $89. I feel like that is too much money but I might have to pay it.

 

My new key and my old keys do have a 'G' on them.

 

nenenago did the programming thing on the new key I bought, then while still connected to the tech stream, he put each key in the ignition and started the truck. At the time, I thought that was just to confirm, but apparently, it was needed. Get hold of the guy, I know he can advise you on getiing your keys working, and you might just decide on an all-in-one key, which would cost less than another locksmith to program your old keys!

Heres how the Toyota Immobilizer ECU(transponder chip computer) Works.

To add keys, You must insert a programmed MASTER key first. This allows the car to go into programming mode by using locksmith computer or the dealer computer. If no keys are present or a valet key is present...The Immo ECU must be reset. By resetting, ALL keys are erased and the first key inserted after the reset becomes the Master.

So, it's impossible he could erased your keys UNLESS he did a reset. By doing a reset, he knows all keys will be erased. So if this is the case....you got scammed.

I just purchased one of the "all-in-one" keys from neneago but mine has the dot on it instead of the G. The vehicle is a 2010 Tacoma DCSB. The dealer wants $89 to program it and I thought that was a bit steep.

I'm going to check with some locksmiths in the area but is the Techstream and OBDII concept a better route? It looks a lot cheaper!

 

My dealer quoted me $55 and a local locksmith quoted me $95. The Techstream and OBDII is cheaper, and it's the method the dealer uses. Not sure what aftermarket options are available for locksmiths. Oh, and my key was a G chip on a 2014, so it might be different for a Dot on a 2010. I'd be curious to hear what you find out. I used this method to program 2 keys from neneago.

 

I had no choice as I had to get a key to drive home as I was stuck in an airport 3.5 hrs away from my house. I had no way to get in the house to get my spare so I had to get the key made in the spot.

I was wondering if I called ToyoCare and told them I lost my key if they would tell me they would tow me to the nearest dealer or if they would send a locksmith to make me a new key.

 

Also, I called my insurance(geico) and they told me that they would reimburse me up to $100 dollars for the locksmith service. They also said if I would have called me them and they would have called a locksmith in their network it do it would have been a lot cheaper.

This is how my idea of calling Toyocare came up. I would like to see what Toyocare would be able to help me out with.

 

Gmoney.... When you are driving now..Is the immobilizer light on? Hopefully it is. This mean the car is in auto registration mode.

 

I have not payed attention to that. What does "auto registration" mean?

 

It means you can add your keys that are at home. The light must be ON while driving and the light should also stay on when the car is turned off.
