I don't see them dropping the i4 but I don't know much like you said. And don't be surprised, I think a 2nd gen v6 4x4 could get 18 easy, and if I drove it conservatively, even 22. But that's me and if most people had to drive like me they would go crazy :)
So a 3rd gen 4x4 should get well over 20 IMO. Can't wait to see this thing.

it's a tradeoff... Toyota does this out of design, keeping reliability as a priority, which in turn is the very reason their vehicles are so popular.

I notice they also don't say its a complete redesign, as in no new frame.

The powertrain test mule we saw running around had largely the same frame. The 4th gen to 5th gen 4Runner largely carried over the same frame with some small improvements. I'd imagine they are doing small improvements on this one, too.

Toyota called the 2014 Tundra "All New" when it was introduced and we see what that was.

I don't care if the frame stays the same (provided it's rust resistant). Most people complain that they don't want the Tacoma to grow and I don't think it will. If it uses the same bones but everything else is new, then that is new to me.
Toyota has said exterior, interior and drivetrains are all new. I like the current Tacoma's size so I am okay with that.
I still think it is a 50/50 chance a manual will be offered with the V6. If so, there will be a MPG penalty like there is now (and no manual offered on DCLB models like now).
Styling will take cues from the Tundra update (as we have seen with tailgate teaser photo) but the Tacoma will keep it's well proportioned athletic stance that the Tundra does not have (The Tundra is a brute with a huge grille, looks more like a power lifter than lean sprinter).
I totally just pulled all out that out of my ass but that is what I see happening. Yes, total speculation, but there it is. To me that route seems like a safe bet for Toyota. People with Tacomas have active outdoor-rich lifestyles. They need more capability and don't want the "my dick is bigger than yours" grill. I think 25 mpg and 7500 lb towing will be obtainable from properly trimmed models.

You misunderstood my post. The frame will probably be an evolution of the current one, but the drivetrains, interior, and exterior are all new. There is no reason to fully redesign the frame, so evolutionary changes make sense for that.

The Tundra's lack of drivetrain updates were a casualty of low volume. They pulled out all the stops with the '07 and were bitten badly.

I'd love to post what I know. But hell, I doubt anyone would believe me anyway. I'll just say that there are a few posts here that are spot on.

It can tow 7500 right now.

Just because you can doesn't mean you should, that's its good for your truck, or you'll get good mileage doing it.

I think Toyota needs to up the fuel economy - eco-tech F-150s get in the low 20s, while I'm getting 17 with my manual trans pre-runner.

Yes, I know gas is cheap now but it's not going to last forever.
