Left wheel or wheels binding on gentle right hand bends...deadly.

Hi All,

I have a 2014 4wd tacoma trd sport with 17000km. For the third time in 6 months, the left wheel(s) appear to lock up (with a sound similar to abs or vac) causing the vehicle to swerve to the left. It lasts about one terrifying second, during which time I need to firmly grip the wheel to get back in my lane. There are zero lights or alarms that go off. It happens with no brakes applied, on gentle bends traveling about 50 kmh.

I brought it to toyota who said there were no codes, and that the zero point was normal. It is nearly impossible to replicate (three times in 6 months) but could very well lead to me having a head on collision. The roads have been dry and gravel free and warm. Toyota has said they have done all they can do unless it can be replicated with a tech in the drivers seat. I honestly fear that one day it is going to pull me into oncoming traffic.

Thoughts?

On a side note, this new truck has already been in for two other warranty issues (faulty 4wd actuator and loose transmission mounts and loose truck bed mounts. Beginning to smell like a lemon.

Do a search as this has been talked about quite a bit. The majority of the issues arise when the truck is lifted. However, in some cases, some stock trucks have shown issues.

I lifted my truck about 1.75' in the front and 2.5' in the rear and also removed my sway bar!

I have yet to experience this happening. However, I've heard it's scary as fuck when it happens!

OZ-T, I would have gotten the service manager and whoever else to drive the truck with the other person sitting in the front seat.

I would have then hoped in the back seat and very calmly put on a full faced helmet and proceed to say "good luck, hope you have your Estates in order"!

Their reactions would have been priceless!

 

I've had this happen to me 3 or more times doing about 60k+ around corners usually on a incline/decline through dips...I won't let my wife drive the taco anymore until I'm absolutely sure its been resolved...The Yaw sensor has been re-calibrated and I try to remember too turn off the VSC system...Seemed to fix the issue for now...I would be happy just to disable it all together...

I have seen more recent tacos go downhill in reliability. Whats up with that???

 

Thanks all. I have installed firestone airbags but not sure if this has changed the zero point. The trac control issue seems to happen whether the bags are inflated, completely deflated and whether or not I have my camper on the back or not. It also happened once before I had installed the airbags. I took the truck out for a long test drive on mt lemmon yesterday and had it happen another 1/2 dozen times, usually at around 65km around bends. The trac control light did flash. Oddly enough, I wasn't able to activate the trac control when I picked up the speed and drove more aggressively, causing the tires to squeal. After another cll to the dealer, it turns out they didn't recalibrate the zero point, the just scanned for error codes and, since there were no error codes, they figured I must have been imagining things. I'll get the sensor calibrated once I get to canada and have the time to leave the truck with them until it is fixed....hope that solves it.
