So i have the anytime fog mod done on my truck and HIDS for headlights so i hardly ever drive with my headlights on. But on occasion (dark back roads usually) i turn them on. and since its winter in anchorage i decided it would be a good idea to get a remote start installed on my truck. where I'm assuming my problems began. i mistakingly trusted the shop and figured everything on my truck worked afterward and didn't need to test it out. especially something as simple as headlights. But just the other day i found out the headlights dont work (only headlights. running lights work just fine) i checked fuses and they seemed fine. HID fuses were good as well. when i hit the headlights switch theres the audible noise that you hear under the hood as they switch on. i tried hitting the high beams and still noting works, but again, the noise is there. checking fuses is about as far i know what to check (sad, i know). any ideas on what i should do next?

your owner's manual should let you know which is the headlight relay under the hood. There are also fuses there. Each lo and hi beam has its own fuse, so it is unlikely all four fuses are blown, which means there is a problem common to the entire circuit.

You could listen to which relay clicks. There is a main headlight relay that feeds power to a second relay - the hi/lo beam relay, and then to the fuses for each headlight beam. Check that the relays are plugged in properly, and then check the fuses.

After the power goes through the desired headlight bulb/ballast, there is a common ground connection.

Do you have a meter? If so you can check for +12V at the headlight bulb connector, and also check continuity of the ground connection to the frame/body. That's a good starting point, and reasonably easy to access.

If this is all greek to you, then find a friend that does know and can help

    Here is the diagram:
    http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/lighting/259025-looking-headlight-switch-diagram.html

IF both low beam, and hi beam don't work, it could be a disconnected ground. Check to see if dashboard light comes on when you select hi beam. If it does, then main ground circuit for headlight is open.
If it does not, then the headlights are not even receiving power from the main headlight relay.

almost everything you said made no sense to me haha. and i unfortunately have no meter. so i might need to find someone who knows better. but the light in the cab comes on when the headlights are turned on and the high beam symbol illuminates as well. i wiggled all the wires and checked for what looked like loose connections and found none.

okay, then according to the diagram your relays are working and your fuses are okay. Check the power connections/plugs to your Headlight HID ballasts.

I'll double check all the connections in the morning. Starting to get a bit late and cold out tonight. I'll be sure to get back and say whether or not it worked. Thanks for the advice

Any chance you have a 12volt LED or a stock bulb? you can unplug the stock bulb socket/harness from the HID harness and test for voltage there with those.

fuses and relays can look and sound fine and still not work. i would honestly focus your attention to the HID harness/relay.

is the HID relay a standard relay? or is it a specific one to that harness?

I have had those special relays go bad on me. i ended up just replacing the whole HID harness.

check all of your ground connections too. something could have just been disconnected and not caught when put back together.
