Axes and Shovels

Where are you guys getting your trail axes and shovels. The stuff they have at homedepot looks generic and is either too short or too long. I'm just looking for some good "medium" sized trail tools.

My shovel is the HDX one from Home Depot.

I have a Gerber Axe about the same size as the one Jacob posted above. I am sure it is very similar to the Fiskars.

 

The $5 HDX brand one from home depot. Just the straight wood handled version of the one zscott posted.

 

I have a Fiskars X-15 I rigged up behind the passenger side rear seat in my DC and a military style folding shovel under the seat

I also have a generic short handled shovel I carry in winter in the bed

 

I have a fiskars hatchet and axe I bought online from Walmart to burn up a gift card. Good stuff. Tri fold shovel is from army surplus store. It's generic cheapy. I'll buy a better one in spring

 

my brother carries a Gerber full size. annoys the shit out of me that that thing doesnt come with a sheath. first i honed it to a razor, so it is dangerous as shit bouncing around in his tool box. we wrapped and ducted taped cardboard around it. and nothing dulls a tool more than it bouncing about. it's a good solid tool. pretty impressive for sure.

ME? i love the old school look of a good Gransfor Bruks axe. on my camping trips i take my small forest axe. properly sheathed. i can shave my face with the thing.

I found some good hatchets looking online at walmart and dicks sporting goods. Dicks is a bit pricey though ... but I do have a $50 gift card to burn.

 

What's the bag? I need a tool bag to fit behind the rear driver's side seat in my DC.

 

It's an ARB small recovery bag , I have an 18 000lb snatch strap in there , the tool box / kit I made to fit the spot

E-tools truly suck at digging. They are an emergency item, if you have any expectation of having to dig out, bring a real shovel.

I've personally never carried any axe/shovel with me because I've always had a winch, straps and other vehicles.

 

I also have a Fiskars x-15 axe, it is worth every penny it costs. When needed I bring a Bully Tools d-handled shovel that is a little brute.

Are axes only necessary on the longer less traveled trails?

Not necessarily. If you seriously need to recover a vehicle, you could rig up some stuff with logs you chopped yourself. I hear axes work well against zombies as well...

You can also clear a path better, slice up firewood... it's an axe... seriously...

I've been in the market for another axe and looking at Gransfors Bruks; GB seems to universally get great reviews, but they are quite pricey. Anyone have experience with Husqvarna?
