Personally for my needs a cap wins out. Im not quite in snow country but sure gets pretty wet over here in Oregon. I did not see any noticable mileage gain or loss with the install of the cap or any sag, although as mentioned my truck rides a little softer with some weight in the bed, roughly 200 lbs is what the cap weighs. I have a snugtop CX which offers a place to store gear/bikes and equally as important a wet, excited dog.

Just my two cents, but having the ability to lock whatever I want in the bed at a moments notice is a huge plus.

I've had four trucks and never needed a topper. I cant imagine asking anyone if I should get one or not. If you need one, get one. If you don't need one, don't waste your money.

IMNHO, if you think you need a cap, you don't need a truck! An SUV might be a better choice. I use my truck as a truck and that means an open bed.

Legit concerns. Loved my toppers. They are pretty nice to keep things dry and out of the weather. If you can think about installing a pulley system at home(if possible)to be able to remove/install solo and store it when you need the open bed.

Pay no attention to the below fucktard response.

I love my topper ...mismatch paint and all. I use my trailer for big items. Both are removable.
Hope you find what you want.

I have a love/hate opinion of (caps, toppers, shell) whatever one calls them.
Mine is a "Radco" aluminum, very light, color matches very good. after weighting the pros/cons the pros win out. I had made a vow not to put a cap on the Tacoma, but after a few months one went on. I also have trailers for the big stuff

    Softopper.

Best of both worlds. I've had mine a year, almost two, and use it all the time, canopy on canopy off. Looks good and is half the price of a hard top. Up and down in less than 5 minutes. Less weight, no squat, no mileage difference.

I had a topper within 30 days of buying my truck, it was only 1K and it was money well spent. I don't know what it weighs, but the truck sits the same as before and there was no real difference in gas mileage. I think what gas mileage is lost from the additional weight is made up for in better aerodynamics. As others have said, its a drag when trying to haul something tall so I have a trailer for that. Otherwise, I like to having the large lockable area and, most important, I like the look.

Back-up cam is a major factor in the battle. It doesn't eliminate blind spots, but it helps to identify what you just hit while remaining on your ass lol!!! I think it will help a ton with a cap!

I just about sharted when I went to buy a fiberglass shell and found out how expensive and heavy they are. Happy I went the aluminum route. It's nice to be able to hose out the inside if dog puke gets on the ceiling. I can also remove or install it solo.

Is wind noise is much different with a topper on then with no topper??? Im surprised to hear that I was considering the Snugtop XTR I think or whatever their top of the line model is, but now Im second guessing.
