So the reason for a relay is so the switch isn't getting all the power that will be sent to the light(for example)? If so why aren't the switches able to handle that power?? Help me understand, is there five pins on a relay? Power in/out, switch power in/out and a ground? I have more questions but I'll stop here fur now. Haha I have a herd time with some of this stuff. Once I get it it'll be easy I'm sure but that initial understanding of it is critical.

Ok. On a 5 pin relay there are numbers next to each pin.
30- power coming from fuse block
87- hot wire going to light
87a- turns relay on when switch is off? (Not sure)
86-hot wire coming from the switch to relay
    85-ground

Then you have a 12v source coming into your switch separately. When you flip the switch it sends 12v volts into the relay creating a magnetic field that closes the circuit between the fuse/battery and the light, so the light comes on.

Some switches can handle the power but it's basically just extra protection for the switch I believe. Kinda like a bodyguard. Say Mason had to lift 50 pounds all day, he can do it all day every day without a problem. But one day the boss decides mason had to lift 250 pounds all day. Mason knows that he isn't capable of keeping it up so he employs Caleb to lift the weight everytime that mason taps him on the shoulder. This is kinda how a relay works. In that analogy Mason is the switch and Caleb is the relay

Also remember that on some relays 85 and 86s functions are interchangeable. Just make sure you hook it up right the first time. Some relays have a diode inside that can be ruined (ruining the relay) if it is hooked up backwards

Okay, thanks!! So if you are wiring up anything with a switch its best to use the relay correct? Is there a time when you wouldn't use a relay, curious? I'm lookin to use six switches and a new fuse block and with the use of the relays the amount of wiring and a minimal understanding of "more complex" wiring has got me kinda hesitant. Is a 100 amp breaker more than enough for a six place fuse box? It'll be mostly just lighting that will be wired up.

Another question for ya. The bussman fuse/relay box....why are there only five relays to ten fuses? In my simple mind one would think there would be an even amount of each? Why is this?

That's a question for me to answer. It is not like the SPOD where you are just dealing with a relay box. These are made to configure in many different manners. Could use a diode or resistor or anything else in the configuration. In its simplest configuration. You could have the 5 relays fused, then 5 fused accessories. Giving your box 10 total circuits to run accessories off of. You can still put multiple things on 1 fuse. Thus just gives your application a cleaner, waterproof, all in one package.

With the 10 relay/40 fuse version same thing.

    Thanks skygear!
But still not sure about the five to ten thing... u say 5 relays fused and five fused accessories, giving ten circuits. This is how I initially understood it. But this is where I get confused, are there now five circuits running without a relay?? If so what are the "guide lines" for using or not using a relay? Or am I just not getting it and all ten circuits are infact utilizing the five relays?

Really this discussion should be happening in my for sale thread since this is just a mounting plate thread. I will entertain you here though.

Say you have Hood lights with a pressure or prop switch. The draw and start up current is negligible and could just be on a fuse. Same with bed lights. Same with a CB. and many other accessories. Some accessories have a built in relay. Like a Viair on board air system. The relay is in the big grey pressure switch housing. For that, since there is already a relay, you just connect up on one of the fused sides. Use one of the 10g leads I give. ARB compressor has its own harness, an ob board Fridge normally just needs power. Put it on the other 10g lead I put on these.

    a little clearer?

if you want to continue the discussion, out of respect for the OP, please quote me, and continue it here -> For Sale: Sealed Waterproof Fuse & Relay Boxes - RFRM (10 relay, 40 fuses) & RTMR (5 Relay, 10 fuses) no more Blue Sea/ SPOD

So have you made up any for 1st gen w/ 5 spd on the driver side? I went through the whole thread and noticed no reference to any completed. I have a 98 with the shoe box sized charcoal canister. Can you give me a ballpark price? I am at sea right now but will be back ashore in a couple months.

Steve. I'm not affiliated with Yotamac. But I'll see if someone can post up some of the 1st gen measurements. Bet that there is something that will fit if none of the already in production plates do.

What else do you need to put on the plate? The Blue Sea block, anything else?

People, do not forget, if using the BLUE SEA blocks, you have real-estate underneath the blocks. You can mount the relays underneath there.

With Option 4-C, are there mounting holes to mount the plate to the truck?

2015 4x4, 2.7L MT if that is relevant.
