Howdy people! So I was changing axles in my '10 Tacoma, and the driver's side just refuses to come out. I've tried prying it every way imagineable, and no luck. The axle actually seperated at the last (innermost) boot, so there's just the 'tulip' part remaining stuck in the diff. My question is: if I remove the passenger side axle (again) would I be able to hammer the driver's side out using a center punch and a mallet? Any advice would most definately be appreciated. Thanks for your time,
    -Grant

Nope, the pinion shaft of the diff will be in the way.

The passenger side came off like butter, the driver's side is giving me heck. If I can't use a punch thru the opposite side of the diff, are there any other tricks or tools I could try?

Here's one way. There is also a way with webbing or cord I believe. Ill see if I can find that one too. Good luck.

Sorry not c-clip, I meant snap ring. There should a snap ring you need to remove to get the axle out IIRC.

just keep the CV stub in there and rebuild the new axle into it.

Isn't there a trick of putting a spacer between the hub, with the axle nut still attached, and something stationary, then turning the steering wheel? I've seen that used for something before.

Maybe unbolt the hub then stick a bar between the wheel bolt flange and the LCA, then turn the steering wheel to the left.

Thanks for the advice people! I might try winching it out (with a come-along setup), or the cable-sledge trick. If I can track down a slide-hammer up here, that'll be my first choice. Think I should engage 4wd while trying to take it out, or might that do more harm than good?

we tried doing that on my friends truck and kept breaking hose clamps. I say just leave it in there and rebuild the new axle on to it. Not like it's broken.

I have had this problem a couple times. get 1/4" or 3/8" cable with cable clamps loop one end around the end of the CV. The other end with a loop to a come-along hooked up to another truck or something stationary at the same height. Load a far amount on the cable then you and a buddy pry on opposite sides and it will come flying out. good luck.

If using the come-along approach - be careful not to apply so much sideways force that you end up pulling the truck sideways off it's jackstands! Takes less force than you might think to tip those things over.

You'll only make that mistake once.

I did this the other day. I used a ratchet strap but I pulled the long strap out of the ratchet mechanism and only used the strap. A decent rope or cable would work too. I just wrapped it around the axle near the diff and then wrapped the other end around a hammer and popped it a few times. I didn't even use a sledge, just a regular hammer. It took me ten pops on the line or so and it slid out. The local Pep Boys had a slide hammer but not the correct fitting for the end of it.
