I didn't expect selecting shocks to be so difficult. I’ve tried to look carefully at Fox, King, and ICON. I think I’ve narrowed down my selection to either ICON or King shocks. I would appreciate either your opinions and thoughts; or, the facts (as you seethem) based on your experience.

First, my application. I have a2014 TRD Sport 4X4 DCSB. I put a lot ofmiles on my truck daily. About a quarter of the mileage is backroad driving (35 to 45 MPH), and the rest is highway (55 to 70 MPH). Road quality is a mixed bag. I am lookingfor as smooth and comfortable a ride as possible. I don’t drive my truck off road.

I’m open to other suggestions but I think I narrowed my search to thefollowing:

    ICON Stage 1 System whichincludes:
    58630 Standard Travel Adjustable Coil-ove
    56503 ICON 2.0 Rear Shocks

    Or, King:
    25001-119 Standard Travel Coil-overs
    25001-121 Rear Shocks

The King shocks are 2.5” tubes with 7/8” shafts. The ICON, as I understand, are 2” tubes withsmaller shafts. Both are aluminum. The Kings are a good bit more expensive. I’m wondering if they may be overkill.

This. If you don't go off-roading or dive across pothole riddled roads like its the King of the Hammers race then get some 5100's or OME shocks

I am confused. you want all these upgraded shocks and springs that are basically meant for off road use and you don't off road, and oWn 4 wheel drive, as need for speed says I would Get 5100 and call it done

    ...too much shit to list.
King 2.5" shock bodies are steel, not aluminum. The resi's are aluminum if you opt for reservoirs.

Icon's have a 2 pieced dished piston which preloads the valve shims. This gives the shock digressive valving characteristics...which means rougher ride at slow shaft speed movements but smooths out the faster the shaft starts moving.

If you're looking for coushy on-road ride, I would not suggest ICON.

There's more reason to buy quality shocks than just offroading. Rebuildable, revalvable (tunabily) and quality are FAR superior than 5100s.

    ^^this^^

I just put Icon extended travel at all 4 corners of my 2014 and am very happy with the ride. Plus the customer service is top notch. That was a big deciding factor for me.

No doubt! but 2k in shocks on a street queen for an on road ride thats going to be not much different that if you were to spend 300 bucks on 5100's....

True, but you're forgetting about the "v-factor" (vagina).
    Bitches love Kings.

    Pretty much this.

I've had 2 Icon setups and both were capable of bouncing me through the headliner on the street.

Icons with King coil springs.

Because Icon springs rust more easily.

Middle ground? Maybe some Fox 2.0 coilovers and Fox rears, a little under a grand and great ride quality on road.

Thanks Thegenerik1, read your Fox thread and those of a few others who replied. I was having a hard time getting info from people who had Fox shocks.

What this guy said, seriously. BUT if you plan on becoming a wheeler at some point and plan on doing any trails or running it at speed then you will thank yourself for getting coilovers. As far as choosing the type of coilover you want if your heart is set on them, pick a color. They are mostly all designed the same.

This guy also makes a good point too. I initially was more interested in getting coilovers just because of the fact that I never wanted to replace my shocks again due to the rebuildability factor. I have already rebuilt one of my shocks actually. It's insanely easy. Turns out I ended up becoming a wheeling fanatic and used them for their intention. :)

I concur. I love my Fox rear's and air bumps on all 4 corners. :)

I enjoy my Sway Away fronts. Quality built pieces that are tough as nails. Definitely have endured all the hell I have put them through.

Nothing yet. Old truck had the works.
I personally love my icons got the stage 3 kit. It is bouncy though unless your FLYING. Faster you go the smoother it gets. No experience with kings. I do like my Icons though. Washboards seem to melt away as i float over them. Even big potholes get eaten up when i go faster.

Learning from gathered information and your own experience makes sense but learning from the experience of others turns information into intelligence.

There are times when sharing information you've been given, even if you are fairly certain it is not correct, helps to get to ground truth quickly. The only skill required is to be able to subordinate your ego and allow someone else to correct you.

I appreciate the corrections and feedback from a guy with over 10K posts who is open minded enough to recognize the obvious "there's more reasons to buy quality shocks than..." Thanks again jberry813.

To all others, a sincere thank you for your information and insight. For what it's worth, I put ~100K miles on my 2007 Tacoma after putting 5100s on it. For the money, they can't be beat. There are a couple of very specific improvements I'm looking for from the shocks I put on my new truck.

Please, keep the information flowing. It's all good!
