This is the thread that discusses the Chevy springs:
    http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/suspension/194386-tacoma-spring-refurbishing.html

My 3/4 ton chevy springs were about 49". It is suggested to use springs produced pre-1970 I believe (better metals used). I used the Toyota mounting leaf and the rest are Chevy:

Question...Will a A.R.E. Z-series cap support an RTT? I know this topic has been thrown around a lot, but most answers I come across aren't definite. I am contemplating putting a full Prinsu rack, but may just get the Cabrac and put thule cross bars on the cap since I like the look and "basicness". Still pondering.

I personally don't have any problems putting a roof top tent on a shell. Yes it is highly debated but I have never heard of a failure actually occurring. In fact I have never heard of any fiberglass topper breaking because of the weight on the roof from any kind of load.

When the tent is on the roof alone it is only 100-150 lbs. Most shells are rated for that kind of weight standard. When you open the tent, half of the weight goes to the ladder and cantilevered area maybe more depending on how you sleep.

I will say that if you do put it on the shell the one thing you can do to limit any "potential failures is spread out the load as much as possible and try to keep the mounting points closer to the sides where the forces will go striaght down in the the side panels vs a ton of weight in the middle of the unsupported roof.

Not a definite answer I know but I have used my RTT on my snugtop for almost a year now in all kinds of conditions including moderate trails like top of the world in Moab with no problems. Expedition overland took their roof top tent on the A.R.E shell through their entire Alaska trip and continue to use it that way with no reported incidents.

^That will probably be you best deal to get in a tent. Just expect a wait. Probably worth the savings though.

    What zscott said..

Also if you are worried about weight a lot you can always add 1 or 2 more crossbars into the track that goes on the roof of the canopy, distributes the weight better but not needed.

Last year he had ordered quite a few in anticipation for the groupbuy so they would arrive more quickly, but he was no where near prepared for the ammount of people who got in on the deal. If I remember reading right he said he would put a cap on participants this year. So if you're going to get in on it get in early.

Here's what ARE told me when I asked about mounting on a Yak rack. I have since moved the RTT to the FrontRunner rack, so def good ta go.

"The weight rating on our Yakima Rack when driving the vehicle is set at 150 lbs due to various dynamic forces such as sudden stops, potholes, sharp turns etc. Additionally, you should always consult the vehicle manufacturer for center of gravity ratings. When the vehicle is not moving (for camping) the roof and rack can actually carry well over that amount. While this is not something we guarantee under warranty, our caps have been tested to hold well over 800 lbs when stationary."
