This hasn't been made yet so I figured I'd start it. I know there's a thread with people doing little things like emblems and stuff but if you have done a full dip on your truck post it up.

EDIT: Seems to hold up to general trail abuse, such as mud, tree scrapes, pin striping, etc. Mind you, the pics below are taken on plastidip job that is now over 3 years old.

There were many times that I indiscriminately drove under, around, next to, and otherwise loved on some tree branches. The effects of the branches scraping the were minimal, if at all. There was zero tearing as some other previous posters were concerned with. The most damage were some minor scuffs, most of which can be masked with Ice spray wax.

All that being said, I do have some small speckled stains from other mud encounters that you can see up close. I am not sure if it was some sort of chemical/mineral in that particular dirt, or the fact that it baked in the sun for a couple of weeks before being removed. After this particular outing from the pictures shown above, the truck was garaged the entire time before being washed. I will try to get pics of the offending stains later.


Pro-tip: don't use full strength degreaser (yes even Simple Green) on anything other than white. It will do some odd things to the color and will look rather unsightly.

Someone asked me how long this whole process took so I figured I'd post here also:

I would say 3-4 days of a few hours per day. If you wanted to work non-stop, you could probably get it done in 2 days.

Day 1: wash the shit out of the truck. That's it.
Day 2: Spent a couple hours masking off the windows and stuff. Thankfully with dip, you don't have to mask it off exactly right as it will pull right off most weather stripping and stuff, save for the occasional need for an xacto knife where the dip will bridge between weather stripping and the body. You can also try to tape it off exactly right and then pull it up when the dip is still wet, if bridging is a concern.
Day 3: Finished masking and then sprayed with Pre-Dip spray.
Day 4: Laid down the coats (I had to order another gallon of the final color, so I had to wait almost a week after this. 3 gallons of final color recommended). You only need to wait about 30 minutes between coats. Stuff dries hella fast. Then I pulled the tape off.
Day 5: Spray down the truck with Dip Coat, dipped the flares and reattached and put Dip Coat on those too.

This was me spending basically half days working on it, so if you did it all day, 2-3 days max. I just preferred not to rush it. My work tends to get worse as I get tired and annoyed lol. The first dip job I did took about 2 days though, but I went slower and took more breaks this time.

 

I hope you're not concerned about gas mileage.... that's gonna add a shit-ton of extra weight to the truck.

The little bit of weight the plasti-dip will add will not impact fuel economy enough to notice. It'd be about the equivalent of having an extra passenger at best. You might be thinking of the guys who Line-X'd their vehicles. That stuff is a lot thicker.

 

LOL yeah I'm definitely concerned about gas mileage... full toolbox, 33s with 4.10s and budbuilt skid plate and bellypan, sliders and an ARB.

 

I just peeled the dip off of one rim, it weighed a whole idk... half an ounce? I could crush it with my hand into a ping pong sized ball.

seems to be holding up just fine

 

The clearcoat on the roof is starting to fail, so I'm looking to seal it up. I'm lucky that with care, my clear coat has lasted this long. I see tons of black first gens that look like sh*t due to the failing clear coat.

 

I think it came out great, looks nice and smooth. I have been toying around with the idea of doing my rims. I was going to do it this past weekend but ended up in hospital and with no release date in sight not sure when I will be able to do it. Any advice on how to do it ? I will be using rTtle cans and I am no expert at that.

Just do lots of thin coats for the rims. Hope you feel better soon!

 

Looks like you need to touch up the rims a wee bit

 

I actually need to hit them with goo gone to get the rest of it off. I peeled most of it but it was too thin in some areas to get a good peel.

 

How much did that run you? Love the color!

 

Damn that looks clean. Did you add thinner? If so what was you ratio thinner/dip? Is the dip surface pretty smooth?

I assume you used a electric painters gun?

 

I think the truck looks awesome. How many gallons did it take? I'm guessing that stuff is no more than 10lbs per gallon. (a bit heavier than water)

 

what was the cost of the dip OP? BTW I'm in Tuscaloosa, honk or wave if you see me around town.

 

About $220 for all the supplies

Yes a Wagner gun, no thinner. I think gallons from DYC are pre thinned now. The surface came out fairly smooth, I need to wash it to get a lot of the overspray off and it will look better.

The shipping weight was 32lbs for four gallons. I'm sure the total weight added was more like 20-25.
