I put 255/75R17 (32") tires on my truck, and kind of forgot giving consideration to the spare.

Is it necessary for me to upgrade my spare as well? If I got a flat, would I be able to use the stock spare to drive to nearest service station, or would that put too much stress on the axle/drivetrain? Would a 32" even fit under there, and do they even make spares for that size?

    What are my options, Tacoma-friends?

If you're just driving around on the road it's fine. No (or very limited) 4x4 use with a smaller spare. I personally would run the spare in the front if needed. I'm not sure how sensitive the Tacoma's traction control is but it may be pissed off seeing 1 wheel turn fast than the rest consistently.

I always prefer 5 matching wheels and tires, and do a 5 tire rotation. Then you're always good to go with a matching spare. Yes it costs more but you'll have to buy tires less often. A 32" spare will fit.

    I put a 265/75R16, also 32", under there. It's a tight fit but a fit nonetheless.

Cut the registration tabs off and "most" 255's will fit in the stock spare location "if" you muscle them as far away from the pumpkin as you can.

IMPO - You're going to want a full size spare if you wander into the wild much.

I just got my 255/85/16 under there today. Had to remove my aftermarket hitch and cut the exhaust after it dumps over the axle. I am thinking about cutting out the entire crossbar assembly and remounting the winch so I can get the spare higher and out of sight.

I cant fit a 285 up there. It hits my diff when I wheel. But that could be because of my dif diaper.

3 inch lift with Toytec Boss and All Pro UCA's up front. AP expedition leafs with Bilstien 5100 shocks in the back. 255/85/16 Cooper S/T Max tires. All Pro skids, rear bumper and sliders, Hidden winch mount with XRC 8000 winch. Dual Optima batteries with IBS combiner/isolator and solar. CMC. Auto sliding rear window mod, hidden CB, CVJ axles and plenty of other little mods.
I'm also running 265/75's, but I'm using a 235/85 for the spare. Virtually the same circumference, but an inch narrower and a few pounds lighter. Not much, but a little more clearance underneath. Also, did a little metal bending to let it sit off the exhaust, and as far back as possible.

Can you explain what you needed to bend?

Here is an article on temporary spare tires. It basically covers your question should you drive on the different size spare.

I went to the junk yard, picked up a 255/75r17 tire.

Ordered chevy Silverado steel rim like around 60 bucks and all the specs match 6x5.5 17 inch etc.

Fine if you use it on the front wheels in 2wd.

Picked up a 235/85 Yokohama A/T-S (Yoko's seem to run a bit larger than other brands, so it's damn near 32") and it seems to fit up there pretty well. I banged on the two tabs with a deadhead hammer. Not sure I moved it a whole lot, but the tire seems pretty tight up there. Plenty of room in front of the diff.

Does it matter what side the spare tire sits on when it's up there? Right now I have it with the outside of the wheel upwards - towards the bed. But somehow that doesn't look right to me - or it doesn't look like how the wheel looked when I originally took it down. But I'm not sure if it matters.... the chain pulley is secure and the tire is snug.

If you ever go bigger than a 285 look into a bed rack to mount the spare & a Hi-lift jack.....
