Broken motor mount

Hello and thanks for taking time to read my first post, a little about the truck in question she's a 2003 TRD with 178k miles I would say easily 75% of those miles have been off road and it shows! Not to mention the previous owner hit a deer that did a lot of front end damage that left the truck looking rough to say the least but as it's my mountain lion hunting truck I'm not concerned with looks just that it runs good. Now on to the current problem, I was out hunting a few nights ago and got buried in a couple feet of concrete hard snow dug down chained up the rear tires locked in the rear diff and punched it, I didn't notice anything until I stopped on the other side and my fan was hitting the shroud and my skid plate was hanging by one bolt. Popped the hood sure enough not only is the motor mount broken it has also peeled right off the frame. So here are my questions,#1 is there any way to fix this without pulling the motor I'm guessing no,#2 what mounts should I use to replace them and how can I strengthen it up so this doesn't happen again,#3 since I'm probably going to be pulling the motor is there anything I should replace or upgrade while the motor is out. Thanks again

 

I should probably also add that its the passenger side mount that's broken.

If it’s rough like you say and only want it strong not pretty, I bet if you pulled the mounts and jacked up the motor with wood blocks holding it up, you could get someone good with a stick welder to reattach the brackets to the frame. Obviously you’d get a better job pulling the motor but if it’s just a hunting rig it’s worth a shot.

 

Ironically, I just found out that both of mine are broken (my transmission mount is what has been hold everything together ) and just ordered replacements. As with most topics on here, you will find differing opinions, but I chose to buy new mounts from Rock Auto rather than OEM. You can change your mounts without removing the engine. If the frame side of the engine mount pulled off this is going to be a little tricky compared to just changing engine mounts .

if this was repaired before and a really poor job was done and the welds just failed rather then the section of frame broke off.

fixing the frame before welding on the new frame side mount .This can be done with the engine in but really sucks and causes lots of frustration . pull the engine and make it as easy as possible

The right side sees most of the stress but check the left while things are apart.

Which leads me to wonder the condition of the rest of the frame.

It is your Mountain Truck How much more money do you want to spend.

3.4 time for a timing belt Clutch if manual Lower Ball Joints always things to spend money on.

After reading through the replies I'm thinking for now I'm going to do what I can to get it welded back in place at least to make it till lion season is over in April, then I'm going to order a set of those solid mounts pull the motor and have everything welded in place so I won't have to do it again as I plan on keeping this truck till it just can't be fixed anymore. This summer I'm planning on going through this truck and fixing everything I can mechanically, I'm going to leave the body as is so I can bounce of trees without crying and I'm going to install a lift probably OME still reading through the forums, so I'm sure I'll have many more questions for you guys

Not that uncommon of a failure. Your biggest problem will be fixing the frame and replacing the motor mount perches. Engine will need to be pulled.

I would go with a set of DMZ perches. Bonzen or OEM engine mounts. Don't bother with Trail Gear.

 

If the perches are cracked apart or damaged, I have a upgraded 3.4 perch plate that you can weld on. Its alot thicker and mates to my 3.4 engine mounts perfectly.

As far as the perch tower, it is probably still ok, although alot of customers plate in the bottom of it for moRe strength.

Pulling the motor is alot of work, but makes fixing the perches easy. Not pulling the motor saves alot of tIme, but makes re-welding the perches a total bitch. Ask me how I know haha.

 

I just assumed that if the perch is peeling off the frame like that, you're better off cutting it off, fixing the frame, and starting with a stronger perch.

 

I'm definitely going to be getting ahold of you in the near future for mounts and probably the plates as well, just finally getting back to work after winter layoff so money is going to be tight for a month or two.

 

From the looks of what all I have going on in there with the perch and mount I'm definitely leaning towards pulling the motor and making sure everything is 100%, I plan on keeping this truck for a long time I've already had it 5 years.

 

Depends on how bad. If its just the actual 2-bolt hole perch plate, you can sawzall it off and weld on my new thicker ones.

If the actual perch tower that comes off the frame is crushed and is indenting the frame...then yeah you are correct you need to cut the whole thing off, sand clean and fabricate a new tower.

Best way to avoid all this is to bolt in my 3.4 motor mounts BEFORE any of this happens. If everything stays tight and there is no flex and recoil, then your engine doesn't act like a 450lb slide hammer beating on your frame perches as you bounce around offroad.
