Hey guys, I got a 2013 Tacoma access cab (spruce mica, yea baby) and I'm wondering about this noise the engine makes on cold start. It goes away once warmed up. I'm aware of the emission system pump, and it's not that.

I made a quick video, u can hear it best after the 30 second mark once the fan quits spinning. Any thoughts? Haven't owned a Toyota in 10 years.

    Build thread coming soon!
Mine sounds like that, too. I think it's the injection system. Nothing abnormal, anyhow
Edit: I should say, mine "sounded" like that before the s/c

My 2013 does a similar thing, though not as loud as your video. I plan to ask dealership about in on my first visit for service, though as you state, it only does it cold, then goes away after a while. My opinion is it's another emissions thing, but I don't know for sure. Since multiple owners are chiming in, that's my thought. I might ask dealer to start up another 2013 at the dealership that has not been warmed up. If another truck does the same thing, I will chalk it up to normal for 2013.

Yea, I'll be asking my dealer and have him do the same.

I believe you're hearing mostly the alternator 'whine'. It's probably close to 10k rpm on startup and will be under load charging the battery from the starter draw, parasitic loads when off, etc. Its electronics (rectifier circuit) can make interesting sounds as it does its work.
Key will be if it changes significantly over time under the same startup scenario.

I recently noticed my 13 making this same noise. I wouldn't go as far as letting a dealer tell you its normal. Common is a more acceptable description. It's some crummy design flaw. My Honda crv purrs like a kitten upon startup.

10,000 rpm!? Lol. Engine would definitely make some bad noises. I'm sure you meant 1000 rpm.

What OCNutty is referring to is the rpm of the alt pulley at start up not engine rpm.

READ THIS THREAD and listen to all posted videos. in my book, this is normal
    -------------------------------------
    http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/2nd-gen-tacomas/317054-13-v6-4500-miles-my-motor-may-shot.html
    -------------------------------------

ok I listened to my truck this AM, specifically got in there
to listen around (because I been reading taco forums and nothing gives you
taco paranoia better than threads here...)

    and also the video..

    and I am gonna say...

    -normal
    -they all do it
    --it is piston slap--
----->one dude on here has the same noise and complained about it enough that toyota changed the motor, same noise after engine swap
----->others chimed into that thread and posted videos of the same noise. link to this thread is above

I have the same noise. it sounds similar to a dry bearing in a dry race.

conclusion (best I can figure with my armchair research)
piston slap on cold engine = normal = motor will still last 400,000 miles

    .....

agreed on design flaw but it doesn't detract from the life of the engine

    Sounds perfectly normal to me.

Upon startup you have the air injection pump running, as well as the fan clutch locked up and high idle.

I haven’t been on here for a very long time, but 120k on my odometer. Still the same noise. Err. Ahh. Gak. Gak.
