The derp was super easy. Just make a newspaper/tape blanket everywhere else and spray away.

    image.jpg

Then either take it all off while it's still wet (if you're fast enough; I wasn't) or just lightly run an X-acto over the seam so it won't peel up when you take the masks off.

I another thing about using derp instead of paint is that it's so easy to cleanup if you don't want to remove the flares. Got some overspray somewhere? No problem. Just rub a little WD40 and good as new.

If I was to do it again, the only thing I'd change is make my layers a lot thicker.

Sorry, but what the hell is derp lol. Also, any comments on painting my black flares and bumper with 1E7 can paint to match my silver, how do you think the turn out would be?

Plasti dip (the kind in the aerosol can, like spray paint)

People here tend to call it "plasti-derp" just to rag on those that use it instead of paint.

As far as color matching, your flares should be real easy since they're the base plastic. Do the sanding routine, adhesion promoter, primer, a few solid coats of Duplicolor, then hit with with clear coat. Did it this way on my grille and it's also lasted several years (save for a few rocks to the face in construction zones). The rear bumper skin may be a little more challenging since while it's a skin, I think it's metal (at least it is on my off-road and my friends Sport). If it's plastic, just do the same routine and you should be good. Front bumper skin is also plastic if I remember correctly.

Monstaliner. Remove the flares, prep, finish with Monstaliner in the color of choice.

Yeah but also an excellent budget friendly option with minimal work.

I know plasti dip. Never heard it called derp lol. I've wanted to paint all the black plastic to color match the truck. I have black wheels and it's just too much black. I like the cleaner look of it matching. Not sure if it would match good though, I found the paint code in a can on Amazon of 1E7. Probably gotta think about it before I start the process.

Why would I use a bed liner on them?

I agree. On a flipper. Sharpen it up, let it go.

On a keeper, not as much........... Yea, I know it can be peeled/redone, touched up, etc. Point is, it's not particularly long term wear friendly.

I can agree with that. If it were me I'd just replace them with new. Found OEM ones for $80 a piece from a dealer online.

Yes, the $80 a piece is for unpainted ones. I say your best course of action is to try and properly paint them (i.e. take them off the truck, prep, paint, clear coat, wet sand, etc) then if you royally fuck up, then plasti dip over it or just replace them.

Duplicolor color match for 1E7 has been really good for me. Used it on my grille. (Pic for reference)

Yeah that does look really good. What was your process for prep. I've never really painted plastic professionally lol. Metal, no plastic

What would be the correct prep for best results when painting the fenders, front bumper and grille from personal expierence or anything.

For all your plastic parts (including your flares), I'd follow this old write-up: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/painting-the-grille.117163/

The rear bumper metal skin, I've heard of people using plastidip as a base coat and painting over that, simply because plasti dip sticks to metal reasonably well with little prep other than a good cleaning.

There's a couple screws on the bottom of them in the wheel-well, then the rest is held onto the face of the fender by small clips. The clips will almost certainly break, so you'll need to buy more before you start.
