Hello. I was wondering if anyone had a problem like mine. I have a 2006 Tacoma, 2wd Double cab with a 4.0L. There is a groaning noise when I turn the steering wheel at idle. It sound like it's coming from the passenger side firewall. The sound is intermittant and difficult to locate, even with someone listening at the engine compartment.
At first, I thought it was from the p/s pump and the noise was transmitting through the chasis. Then the other day, I heard it when I had the truck when I was reversing out of my driveway. So I'm thinking that the noise comes out when the idle is at its lowest. And that's making me think if it's the motor mounts.

Has anyone had a problem like mine? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.

    Toby

I think that I am getting the same sort of noise. When I put the truck in reverse or hit a pot hole or little dip in the road the fan seems to scrape (I think). I guess it is the motor mounts? I am going to have my mechanic check it out this week. Until then I have no ride because the sound has gotten progressively worse. Anybody else have any experience with this?

    Oooooold posts.

I have this same exact problem!

It's a distinct/loud intermittent groaning coming from what seems like the passenger side firewall.

    Worse when:
    -Reversing
-Braking while idling. Throw it in park or neutral and sound goes away. Leave it in drive and set emergency brake and release "normal" brake and the sound goes away.
    -Turning

In the past it would go away, but it seems to be getting slightly worse over time. Basically, before, it was only on startup when going in reverse. If I pulled forward and turned I would hear a sound as if a pump was clearing an air bubble. Now it's the same but louder and happens ever time on startup and sometime while driving in a straight line when going over bumps.

Checked the power steering level (fine) but haven't tried to resolve or check for air bubbles. Before I head down that path I was hoping to hear if anyone had/resolved this issue.

    Thanks for your time!

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
That's synonymous with the motor mount(s) rusting through the frame. They fixed that by then time your truck was made beegotaco.

    Thanks for the info, 98tacoma27

While I haven't confirmed it (I just need someone to stand outside the truck while it's running and I'm reversing / turning) I'm now relatively certain that this noise is related to the air intake where it passes through the passenger fender.

From the Technical Service Bulletin October 24, 2007 AIR INTAKE HOSE RATTLE -- Which was covered as a warranty item:

Some 2005 – 2007 model year Tacoma customers (1GR–FE only) may complain of a rattle noise from the right front fender area while the vehicle is idling in drive or reverse. The air intake hose assembly has been improved to reduce noise from contact between the air intake hose assembly and fender.

Welllllllll .... now that I know it's probably not serious ... is it really worth replacing now that I'm no longer under warranty?

I have a loud rubbing noise in my 06 taco It makes it when i am cornering, but mostly when I am reversing. I felt along my fan and felt some wear at the bottom of the grommet. i talked to a mechanic and he thinks it the engine mounts and wont know unless he takes it apart. Any thoughts?
