Tablet mounting

Hey guys and gals,
Would anyone be willing to share pictures and ideas for mounting a tablet in a Taco?

I'm looking to install my Samsung Note 8 for use as a GPS/backcountry nav/music sync device in my truck and am lookng for some ideas. My tablet is sitting in a Trident case which has the AMS attachment system (or whatever its called) so it shouldn't be very difficult. I saw that Panavise has a lot of options a well.

Window suction cups and vent mounts aren't really an option I'm considering.

Also, if you use map software on your device I'd like to hear about that as well (i.e., Back Country Navigator)

I've only seen a few iPads mounted in place of the stock HU.

I just watched the 4 part youtube series done by Sound Man on installing an ipad in his Tacoma. Quite amazing! I'm not planning anything that radical though...but if I had his talents and abilities I probably would.

Tacoma Tech Deck would be my first choice. Almost makes me want to finally get a tablet.

 

The main issue I've personally had with those types of mounts is the amount of vibration you get with them. That drives me crazy. Unless you have a "support" arm attached to the mount it will move. I have tried a multitude of mounts and unless you get a professional mount you will most likely have some movement of the tablet. Yeah... I'm that OCD lol

 

B. Turner, that's exactly what I'm trying to avoid for sure. I find even the Ram mounts for laptops have quite a bit of play in them. This will likely end up being a big exercise in trial and error.

 

Short of a professional mount with multiple mount points I don't think you can get a vibration free mount. I have tried most everything with the exception of replacing my hu with no luck for a tablet mount.

If you find something let me know. I'm interested.

 

Thanks for that. I love the idea of their product in almost every way...but, I wonder if it would be possible to rig it up to mount off the centre console or somewhere other than in front of the HVAC and radio. I bookmarked the site though, definite possibility.

Personally I use a suction cup style mount with my Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 8". It's less than ideal though as it blocks my stereo, but I haven't gotten around to figuring out a better set up yet. I'll probably go with something like the Panavise. I do have a Ram mount for a netbook; it works fine for on-road, but moves around offroad. It's also intrusive into the passenger area.

 

I have an iPad Gen1 mounted on a ram mount that connects to the front inner seat bolt for the passenger seat. I gets in the way of a passenger a little but for the most part its just me, it works great and is very secure a sturdy when I go off road.

I'm doing a Panavise mount behind the AC controls, then a 3" arm from RAM, and a RAM X-grip. I've got a Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 7"

 

It's not a Tacoma.. or even a truck.. haha but this could give you some ideas. I've met this guy (friend of a friend) and it looks pretty sick. you can still use the radio and everything. Very clean install and is essentially held in by a bracket and magnets so if the iPad isn't in the car you can't even tell that anything has been customized.

Thanks for the posts guys. I'm starting to think that the absolute best way to do this is a head unit replacement contraption or possibly some sort of modified, in-dash version where I could slide the tablet right in. This may turn out to be a long project. Other problem is losing my back-up camera in my factory head unit (although I've been backing up without one my entire life and seemed to have survived it).

Wonder if there's a way to send that signal to my tablet....hmmm....maybe some sort of cable will need to get soldered up...or send the camera signal to some sort of wifi video device and have it show up on my tablet. Could even just get the mirror with the camera in it and have the added benefit of temp display.

 

I'm getting a tablet soon and have been thinking about how i'm going to mount it in my truck.

I'm going to use a suction cup mount but no way using it on the windshield.

For my cell phone mount - I glued the disc that came with the mount onto a can that I "duck"taped.

Think I'll try it for the 7" tablet. I can suction the tablet mount to that. I'll have to figure something out to take up excess space around can when it's in the cupholder.

I'm gonna want a suction mount to where it will be out far enough that I can shift so it'll have to have a longer arm (like the #3 link I put from Amazon) but if it's out too far it'll be tipsy. Gonna have to McGyver it probably.

We'll see once it arrives here.

Here's my "rig" job for the cell holder on a can.

 

I honestly think this might be a option for a tablet mount in the vehicle depending on where you want to mount it.

I have the

$28 Nite Ize Steelie Original Dash Kit - Magnetic Phone Mount for Car Dashboard - Car Phone Holder with Strong Steelie Magnet & 3M VHB Adhesive

Steelie version for my Note 3 and it is stable as a rock and the phone stays in whatever position you put it in. I'm seriously thinking about picking up this mount for my truck and mount it next to the radio / A/C controls. The only issue I see with mounting there is airbag deployment. so I might have to search around and see.
