Bed storage container ideas

Hey all,

I'm curious how you all keep stuff organized in the bed of the truck when you're on your adventures (or even daily driving). I have a set of tools, road flares, jumper cables, snatch strap, shovel, etc., that I would like to keep locked up in the bed, especially if going offroad. I'm considering this storage container, either in the 35 or 48 gallon size:

It's pricey and a bit bulky, with smaller internal dimensions, so I'm wondering if there are better options out there? How do you guys pack your things?

I should mention that I'd rather not keep things in the cab as I often have dogs back there.

 

I too am considering some sort of tote for in the bed. So far I have this for shovel/axe mounts:

The tote in the back seat has recovery gear and tools. The backpack is a 3 day bugout bag full of camping and survival gear

Most tools go in the tool box underneath back seat. I keep a rubbermaid tote in the bed for jumpers,tow rope/chains, tiedowns, water bottles.

 

Looks like a 3V pack. I love that line of gear... I bought 2 of their packs last year.

 

I bought this EXACT container in mid December and have travelled 2100 miles with it since then. (Mostly highway)

It is a pain in the butt to carry by yourself, but stores things great. It is all plastic with no WEATHERSTRIPPING, but I drove it back to Dallas in the torential rain and tornadoes last month and NOTHING inside got wet.

Also, Amazon prices fluctuate from $80 to $130 for this. Try walmart instead. Cost me $5 bucks extra to deliver to my DOOR at home.

Here is a pick of how I secured it. I didn't have a lock for it so just used a tarp strap as extra security for it not to open. Yes it is REDNECK, but wanted to be safe and secure.

 

What kind of clamps are holding the shovel and axe? Looks super clean. Do they just bolt to the bed rail?

 

Yes lots of room inside. My wife had a large suitcase and tons of Christmas presents inside. Notice how it fits under the side tracks ... I wanted something that would fit under a cover whenever I get one.

Also the container never moved at all on the highway or on any of the rough back roads I was on.

I made the brackets myself out of some flat steel, bought stainless hardware at Lowes to mount the quick fists to the flat steel, and painted them with black rustoleum.

@Yaozer Those are Quick Fists. I also use them to store a shovel above the wheel well in my bed.

Sweet! I didn't realize it'd fit between the fenders like that, I thought it was just a tad too wide. Also good to know that it fits under a cover, as I have a tonneau cover and wanted to make sure that whatever I got would fit under there. Is it RIGHT at the edge, or is there some room? I ask since I have the Toyota rubber bed mat which is probably 1/4" thick or so.

I think that's the route I'm going to go as well.

 

That reminds me - I need some fire extinguishers for home & garage... Any recommendations?

Thanks, guys. I thought they were quick fists, but the bracket they were bolted on threw me off. Maybe I can try making that with aluminum stock when it warms up.

I got one of those black Walmart totes and secured it in with bungee cords. The top has some cup holders and storage trays.

I don't have a cover yet, but it should fit. I also have a Tacoma bed mat under it as well. Take a look at the pic again and you can see the end letters m ... a ... for Tacoma.

 

If your going with a bed cover I'd shop around for something less tall. I also have a Tundra with a Trifecta folding cover and mat. I use a long flat box in there; more or less to keep things from sliding around.
