2016 Taco Winch Mount

Kinda covered this a few pages back. This is the reason we designed our own hawse for this and included it with the mount...calling it our Big Mouth hawse as it's opening is taller than most.



A hawse exists to help feed the rope, you rarely do a recovery that it ISN'T rubbing on the hawse... unless both vehicles are perfectly flat AND on even ground with even bumper heights... guess how often that occurs?



So.. the floor of the winch tub is aligned with the bottom of the 2x8" hole in the tub... so it's not going to ever touch that because the hawse opening is smaller


So.. in reality, most of the time you are on the hawse anyway, we simply wanted to open it up some to reduce the initial angle of the throat. From straight ahead you have a vertical opening just like you would with most bumpers. You will see quite a few bumpers, Demello for example, where the opening is on a 35-45 degree plane so it's not unprecedented but at 30 degrees we felt like it deserved a special hawse for this application.

Remember.. the more line you spool out the smaller the spool of rope becomes and the exit point of the rope moves higher so there is not a perfect spot for the opening and again, the hawse has to do the work.

 

You can reinstall it but it kinda hangs down...and is really redundant with the front recovery points on our mount.

I assumed the Mount was going to replace entire black piece or at least turn up in front to replace the ridges and that the winch line would have been straight up 90 degrees. This doesn't look as good as the 2015 version....that one looks awesome. The jury is still out on this one for me.

 

The problem is that if we wrapped around in FRONT of the stock black plastic the up and down portions kinda make that impossible and would stick out even further than the Jay Leno chin it is. If you remove the black chin piece then you expose all kinds of forward facing slots, etc with complex angles and bends, impossible to manufacture efficiently.

This is why other manufacturers have you cut the bumper cover and remove all of that but that entail hacking up an expensive ($275 plus paint) piece of bodywork that can NOT be undone. If you screw up the cuts, too bad, buy another bumper cover and start over.

With our simple cuts and using the skid as a template it's almost impossible to mess up...and if you do, even brand new the chin piece (valance) is about $100 now.

We wanted to do something different that reflects what our customers have typically asked for over the years:

1. Easy to install with minimal cutting. (this is our best design in that regards to date)
2. Facilitate the mounting of a winch and have accessibility to the controls.
3. Provide recovery points.
4. Provide some skid protection.

...and we are keeping the price under or at $500 which is about $250 cheaper than other alternatives. It's absolutely rock solid in design, the skid will take a major beating as it's 10 ga high strength steel.

The design of the 16+ is just much different than previous models and takes a much different approach.
