OP - that second trailer is only 400 lbs less weight... I think most here would agree that you need to find a trailer that's like 4000 lbs or lighter. This is my 2 cents.

if your only doing 200 miles and under flat terrain you will be fine. take your time and leave a good space cushion around you.

My camper is about 20 feet and 3200# dry, and it is stressful towing. You want to be able to enjoy the ride, not be worried the whole time.

I tow regularly during the winter and as mentioned several times above anything that heavy eve non flat dry roads is a PITA. With a 22' 5K# trailer you need to take everything slow and leave a very comfortable cushion even with a brake controller. I would find something lighter. substantially lighter...

I test pulled this Keystone Passport trailer yesterday and I must say it pulled like a dream, towed it 40km on the hwy 100-105 km/h. I used a 10k EQ hitch and at no time did it ever feel out of control, we passed a few semi's going the other way and barely a movement from the trailer on the truck. My wife, who is quite nervous on the roads to start with was fine with the minimal sway as well. Most certainly I realize that it was dry but we are light campers and don't expect to load up any more than 500 lbs gear. I also weighed at the CAT scale and dry with me and my wife in the truck we are 9880 lbs, well below the GCWR for the Tacoma. We are going to pick up the trailer on the weekend.

I appreciate all the comments from everyone and have done some very careful considering when choosing this trailer. I have contacted the Toyota dealership and their recommendation is to stay within 85% of the max tow rating which would put a loaded trailer weight at 5525 lbs or less. I believe I should have no trouble achieving that. Fuel economy will most certainly be poor and I agree the Tacoma is best not suited to pull such a load...but...it CAN do it safely. It makes no sense for me to upgrade to a V8 1/2 ton for the 6-8 times I will pull it a year. The safety of my family is the most important thing and while I do admit that I am at the very upper limits of the Tacoma's towing ability, I don't believe I will be over it. Careful and cautious driving is the key component in all of this. Staying below 100 km/h, a good brake controller, towing less than 300 km from home, new tires on the Tacoma, defensive driving and I think it is going to be pleasant experience. Very excited to get into the RV world!

    Cheers!

How much did the trailer weight when you weighed it by its self? I am curious how much the advertised dry weight was off?

Ignore some of these folks that are screaming you are going to kill you're family . That's a total exaggeration by a bunch of folks who do not own rigs even close to what you are looking at. Will the Tacoma excel at towing +5000 lbs like a half ton? NO! Can it do it safely when properly equipped and driven at a speed safe for ambient conditions? YES!

If you can stay well under your total vehicle + trailer weight rating and the Tacoma's towing rating you will be safe with as long as you have all the proper equipment for your setup (well tuned brakes, weight distributing hitch, sway control device, airbags, etc.). Make absolutely sure you know your brakes and adjust the tune for brake break in every couple of trips. Mountain passes won't be fun, but even semi's slow down on grades. I've never seen the point of guys with 1 ton dually diesels towing 5000 lbs just so they can rip it up the hill and j-brake the way down. What a waste of $70K and who really wants to drive a 1 ton in town or at there destination? A half ton won't do much better at keeping it's speed on any sort of grade than the Tacoma, except maybe an Eco boost but even then you'd be flooring it and burning up the tranny.

That all being said, I find towing 5000 lbs behind my truck not the least bit entertaining. I have a S/C setup and it literally drinks the gas back. Good power, still not a good setup for what I bought. It may be worth going to something bigger, like an F150, in front to pull anything over 3000 lbs over long distances or repeatedly over short ones. I'm debating upgrading right now. If you can put up with the shitty mileage your truck can and will handle the load you have talked about here, just be prepared to stop as best you can and drive at a safe speed. GLHF!

    Just getting started
I routinely pulled a 3200# camper (listed weight) plus gear with my '03 DC 4X4 TRD OR. I definitely felt like I had weight to spare. I was using a sway bar. My new DCLB 4x4 TRD Sport is longer and heavier with more power...

Pulled this trailer about 500 km over the past few weeks. Tacoma has no problem at all with it. Equilizer hitch makes a big difference! No issues with sway at all. Granted I only pull it between 90 and 100 km/h. Gas mileage was poor, as was expected, ranging from 10-12 mpg but I did get 16 mpg trailing a semi for about 100 km.

I pull a keystone bullet 5200 lbs with my Tacoma and figured out for me its about weight distribution its 30 ft with spread axels I travel approx. 200 mile a weekend with zeroooo problems. I have learned that placement of items in bed of truck and front of trailer really helps me.

I tow a Jayco X18D with my double cab Tacoma. It was supposed to weigh 3300 according to the salesman. Turns out it weighs 3700# with propane and AC. That is fine, I can live with that. Tacoma pulls it just fine. I work at a Ford dealer and talked to the mecnanics in the back, I found that by pulling in 4th gear rather than 5th, the trans stays cooler and I can easily do 70-75 MPH. and it still gets 9-10 mpg. Couple times I hit 80MPH and I could feel the stability of the whole rig starting to decline. at 70 I feel safe and i feel I am not overworking the truck. Look into a Jayco ultra light hybrid trailer. mine is double axle for better stability, plus we fold out the beds when we camp so it works out great!

I tow a 2012 Jayco JayFeather x213 (has a rear king bed slide, not tent) with my 2013 Taco Double TRD w/tow package. Dry sticker says 4300lb. 21ft long. I live in BC and tow in the mountains. This trailer is the MAX i would want to do. Not bad 90% of the time.

We tow a Catalina 273BH ( 4817 dry) with a 2011 Dbl. cab with a weight distributing hitch and it feels fine. We make sure not to load up the trailer or truck. We will switch to a sway control hitch next year to be safe.

Streeter...Are you still happy with the towing of the 2400BH? We are thinking of doing the same thing. Any regrets or suggestions other than what you have already stated?

I'm looking at picking up the 2015 version of that trailer. Any concerns you've had with the trailer itself?

Hey sorry I just saw this now. Must have missed the email notification. We LOVE the trailer, only thing I have a small gripe about is the way the roof at the front can sometimes pool water in the front corner. But I am sure thats just a "my trailer" thing. I would buy another one in a second. Tows great, sleeps great, and love the floor plan. Hope you find a trailer that works great for you!

We looked at a 2016 keystone passport 151ML today...The box is 15.5 ft. long but it's a full 8 ft. wide
The sticker inside the door jam said 2940 lbs. unloaded. It said never exceed 960 lbs of cargo also stated that a full load of water equals 357 lbs. of cargo. Gotta add another 100 lbs. for 2 propane tanks and deep cycle battery.
Can my tacoma handle this camper with proper brake controller and WDH setup? Or should I look for something a little smaller?

Am I forgetting anything else to add for weight?

I have 2005 tacoma pre-runner 4.0 V6 auto trans, new frame with the new leafpack tsb done

    Thanks for any info...
