Tacoma Wood Push Toy

Ever since I picked up the Tacoma in January, my two year old has taken an interest in pick-up trucks. I wanted to to get him a chunky sized push toy but nothing locally available seemed to fit the bill. For some reason, construction vehicles are all the rage in the toy isles.

So I spent a weekend with a borrowed table saw and widdled half a plank of pine into a truck for my son.

Feels pretty stout. Already survived several drops and smashes that would have crippled cheap plastic crap.

Some more pics comparing my latest build (clear polyurethane finish) to my previous build (green and black). I narrowed the truck a bit so it would fit my son's hand better and added a few details. The whole thing is about 6" long 2.5" wide and 4" tall.

What did you use for axles?

 

3/8" dowel running through a 13/32" hole. I used 1/2" nylon washers between the wheel and the axle block to reduce rubbing friction.

 

What keeps the wheels from running off the axles ?

Friction and polyurethane on one side. Friction on the other side. It's surprisingly solid.

I might glue the loose side eventually once I replace the over sized 1/2" washers with proper 3/8" washers... but TBH they're pretty solid as is. Like I have to TRY to pull them off... twisting and everything.

I still have some of the wood toys my father made for me as a child. They've survived 35-40 years so far!
